I don’t think that translated very well to the old French national assembly . . . but it is ironic. And it probably does already scare the lefties, hence their anti-religion stance.

I think - in it's modern sense - the term comes from the French
Rive Gauche, or "Left Bank," the part of Paris that's full of bohemians, artists, writers, and other creative types. What we would today call "hippies."
The hippies of the 1960's and -70's were nothing new. The mass-media celebration of them was new, but they weren't new.

The terms derive from the first French National Assembly, where supporters of the King sat on the right and the republicans sat on the left.
