We need to figure that out.
The point is that 1000 yards is a little over a 1/2 mile. In most situations if not all, the sniper team has to move unobserved to within that 1000 yards and the closer the better. If they do have to take the shot, the team will normally only get one chance. After that, the have un-ass the AO ‘cause the target defensive assets will come after the team. Far more likely for the team to go into an area unobserved, set up a blind and report back details over a time period of several days. Perhaps even call in air strikes or artillery. The rules change in an urban environment due to the difficulty in directly engaging the target.
Getting in and getting out unobserved uses a LOT of skills around movement, concealment, camouflage, etc. Failure or even weakness in any of those areas and the team will never even get close enough to get a shot. Or, if they do make the shot, they wont get out.
When I checked several years ago, the 6.5 mm bullets had the best B.C.s available.
Only ammo that seems to be on any shelf in wm or outdoor world is 7mm.
Bump worthy
It all depends on the opposition. If it is a government-funded army, complete with tanks and airplanes, then yes, you stay low. The soldiers are most likely not hunting you specifically anyway; their task is to control the territory - key roads, key cities, key heights.
However if you are against a gang with handguns and a few shotguns, a mere .22LR rifle will devastate their ranks, and the sniper will not even be in danger.
One obvious advantage of sniper approach in the second case is that you, alone or with few friends, cannot afford close combat when fifty thugs rush you, all shooting their handguns from 20 yards away. Some of them will fail to miss you; and their proximity will result in high angular motion as they run (meaning that you will have hard time hitting them.) A sniper would be dispatching enemies from a safe distance, one by one, and if that distance is sufficient then not even one of that crowd will have time to reach the protected area.
Proper body alignment is something barely touched on in this article. Whether a left-handed or right-handed shooter, the corresponding leg should align with the longitudinal axis of the rifle. This helps to absorb recoil and bring the rifle quickly back on target.

Marking....
Concealment and knowing where and when to take the shot will get you back home.
This is BS myth. The officers were never trained in the proper use of the sniper.
I made my own, too! Except every time I wear it some damn fool calls 911...
; )
Very true. Your geographic area matters ALOT. I live in the mountains, and I’d have a difficult time even finding 1,000 yards/meters to make such a shot. 300-(maybe)750 would be the average max around here. I suppose one could get a 1,000 yard/meter shot out of a mountain-to-mountain scenario. I wonder what effect on ballistics, firing from a very high place to a very low place would have. I’d imagine there would be a change in ‘bullet drop’ from that of flat terrain.
I don’t think this country is quite to the point of Nazi Germany where the army hauls citizens away one by one.
Not yet, but maybe.
What I think is most likely to occur first is that we will have a financial collapse that will be so devastating that the army will be tied up with Watts like riots in every major city. The millions of people who now believe that it is the duty of someone else to feed and clothe them will go absolutely nuts.
The real danger to freepers will be roving bands that go to the suburbs or country side, in small groups maybe 6 or so, to rob those who have food or any other possession that can be bartered.
So as you said, close encounter weapons will be required.
The “DC sniper” incident showed how one sniper team could come close to shutting down a city.

Thank you for the ping. Nice article.
But I've been getting purdy damned good with it. I'm not taking anything down at 1000 yds. but 300 yds. is very doable.
