I think my rifle choice would be a 6.5X55 with a fast twist to handle the long heavy bullets. A 6mm Remington or .243 would be about as good again with a fast twist barrel.
Each of these would reach out to 800 yards accurately and with enough power to kill. These would all use long heavy for caliber bullets. A separate high quality rangefinder would be useful and a scope which can match various ranges would also be good.
Only ones of the grand kids got showed off more than that pic the last few months!
Kids have Eagle eyes.
Rex is a long range marksmanship genius. No doubt about it. The videos are long but soooo worth watching.
Everyone was telling me I was getting older so I put the action in a tactical stock with a bi-pod. Im gonna stretch her legs this year. As soon as this global warming passes and I can get back out to the range.
I gotta miss the range this weekend due to ice. LOL
Of course, learning these skills also make you a much better hunter.
I have no formal training, but always figured the best "exit plan" for a sniper is the ability to run like hell for an extended period. Sadly one I no longer entertain. So I guess I'll be the one picked to try to hold 'em off while the main group escapes.
I don't recall too many movies where that worked out well for the one who volunteered to hold 'em off though. :)
Nikons P series is a great value.
I wish that the vids were available 40 years ago. I am sure I would have had a blast using his techniques. Tired bones and recoil blasts don’t go together anymore. LOL
But still, survival thinking doesn’t really lend itself to 1000 yard sniping. It’s a kind of fantasy fun, but not a useful skill in anything except a mad max world. High skill levels with a Glock and an AR or AK are what is needed.
Other than that, not drawing attention to yourself is where it’s at.
#3.
For that reason, I believe a more helpful discussion might be on he subject of how to hide from/defeat heat seeking devices used by gun ships.
The black helicopter and drones will be the first things sent to locate you.
That’s worthy of a nod and a cold beer.
Great value and great scope. I’m thinking of splurging and getting one of the M-308 models.
Preppers’ PING!!
Hat tip to verga and Jet Jaguar for the heads-up.
I have been thinking about a device consisting of two adjustable leather or nylon straps each attached to a leather sling which neatly cradles a rifles butt stock. Attached to the ends of the two leather straps are hooks which are capable of being secured to the end of the rifle bench. The idea being, you are still able to get a good cheek weld and proper eye position behind the scope but the leather straps will absorb the bulk of the recoil before it can reach the shoulder. this saves the shoulder from needless abuse and eliminates flinching. Alternatively, attached to the ends of the leather straps, one might have those spiral stakes used to secure a dog chain so that the device could be used in the prone.
Try a shooting sled ...
I put a sandbag on my shoulder and snug the butt up against it. The arthritis is getting to touchy to fire more than a few rounds.
That's a bit far alright, but don't you think if you could learn to hit something out to a thousand yards, anything closer would be that much easier?
