Healthy Baby Girl Delivered in Ottawa Parking Lot

Paramedics arrived 1 minute after girl born in minivan

Marivic Lezada, 31, was in the backseat of the family van as her husband Jonald drove along Highway 174 near Blair Road just after 5 a.m. when she realized she wasn't going to make it to the hospital.

"I was just telling him, 'Quick, quick, quick, I can feel the head already,'" said Lezada.

After her water broke earlier in the morning, the Orleans couple had packed up their 18-month-old son and soon-to-be four-year-old daughter to dash to the hospital.

But Lezada, feeling more and more powerful contractions along the way, instead told her husband to call 911 and get off the highway.

They pulled off the highway onto St. Laurent Boulevard and into the driveway of his sister's home, where Jonald Lezada said a paramedic dispatcher coached him through the delivery.

Veena Gliceria Lezada born at 7 pounds, 9 ounces

He caught his new daughter in a towel, and when she did not immediately cry, he turned her face down and patted her back as the dispatcher instructed. That's when the baby began to cry.

"That was a very good thing when I heard that," he said.

Paramedics arrived shortly after and took the family to the hospital.

Marivic Lezada said it was a good catch.

"He's a doctor now, I'm calling him doctor," she laughed.

Both Veena Gliceria Lezada — weighing seven pounds, nine ounces — and her mother were in stable condition when they arrived at hospital, said paramedics. They are expected to stay overnight at the hospital.

Ottawa paramedics say they have to give birthing instructions over the phone as many as 20 times a year.

I'm glad the baby was born healthy, but the problem is the parents now can't remember if the baby was left in the red D section or the green C section.

That was easy. Easier than my wife’s labors!

Would it be a mom thing to say to this little girl when she is older and misbehaves, “Your life started in this minivan, and if you don’t cut it out, it will end in this minivan!”

I’ve said, “If you don’t stop that, I’ll shut my eyes and drive us all into a telephone pole. I don’t care if I die ... do you?”

Perhaps conceived and born in the back seat of a minivan.

You have to say it with conviction.

“I’ve been to Confession recently. Have you?”
