GED prep guides, nursing and other professional exam cliff notes were high on the list of frequently filched books — but so too were graphic novels, library officials said.

Book thieves checked out but never returned 70,144 books from Brooklyn Public Library’s 60 cash-strapped branches in 2012, records show.

GED prep guides, nursing and other professional exam cliff notes were high on the list of frequently filched books — but so too were graphic novels, library officials said.

“Those are always going missing,” a librarian at the Brooklyn Heights branch told the Daily News Thursday.

That's a common occurance, especially if they have no ability to track down the thieves.......

I'm sure there's millions of $$$ in late fees that can be recovered if collection were turned over to a private collection agency....

I know, too much to ask.......

As a side note, I suspect most of those overdue items are DVD's...........

Mrs. De Groot: “You’re quite famous, you know. This week, we’ve had returned by mail with checks. The children are terrified and treat each book like fine china.
Mr. Bundy you’ve become the Freddy Krueger of the library system.”

“You know, Mr. Bundy I’ve worked at this library for 44 years. I was eligible for retirement three years ago. You know why I stayed?”

Al Bundy: “You learned to eat books?”

Since this is New York, are they sure there was not a scam, making paper trials for purchases then a card reference for a non-existent book, then a checkout and no return, netting the funds sent for purchasing the book, then the tax write off for stolen books, etc?

At our library in an eastern suburb of Los Angeles, books about witchcraft and magic (sorcery, not prestidigitation) are among the ones most frequently going missing.

This reminds me of a Chris Rock routine.

"Wanna keep your money safe? Hide it in a book! Why? Because (n-words) don't READ!"

So to be the racist that I am I'm going to wager that few of the perps are Amish.

Most likely whites or Asians.

I once had a manager that grew up in Brooklyn. He got some book through the inter-library loan, and it was a valuable first edition.

He said he thought about keeping it, and just paying the replacement cost + $25 or whatever, but he said he returned the book after he was done, including telling them what they had.
