NEW YORK – Ray Guy has become the first punter elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Joining the long-time Oakland Raider were two first-time eligible players, linebacker Derrick Brooks and offensive tackle Walter Jones.

The class of 2014 also included defensive end Michael Strahan, receiver Andre Reed, defensive back Aeneas Williams and defensive end Claude Humphrey, who like Guy was a senior selection.

Re: Ray Guy has become the first punter elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

It always gets my goat how today's writers... never know any history about what they write about. In this instance, they forgot that Yale Lary was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979 after playing for the Detroit Lions from 1952 to 1964. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yale_Lary:

"Lary won punting titles in 1959, 1961 and 1963, missing another one in 1962 by just 3.6 inches. A year he didn't win, 1960, Detroit opponents averaged less than one yard per return on his punts. From the end zone, Lary could consistently punt past midfield with enough hang time to let the coverage team get downfield and do its work. According to Paul Hornung in 2004, he was the best punter ever.

"Once, Lary had a string of six games and 32 punts with no returns, and he had just four punts blocked out of 503 in his career. Lary also returned kickoffs in 1952-53 and 1956, scored three times on punt returns (longest: 74 yards in 1953), was named All-NFL four times and played in nine Pro Bowls. Lary was also a member of the All-Decade Team of the 1950s."

Granted, Lary also played Free Safety but it was his punting abilities that got him into the NFL Hall of Fame.

Congrats to Claude Humphrey, a great Falcon from back in the day. And all the other inductees too.

“I’m happy to see Ray Guy finally get in.”

Yes, its about time.

Dungy DOES NOT belong in the HOF, period.

If you put him in, might as well put Brian Billick (1 SB win) in too. Actually, Billick did more with less. Dungy had the luck of having one of the best QB’s of all time - without Gomer, Dungy is essentially a Ron Meyer-ish level of NFL coach; hardly worthy of HOF honors.

Looks like the NFL HOF may go the way of the MLB HOF - it’s going to become the “HOE” (Hall Of Ehhh).

Russell Erxleben continues to be denied his rightful entry in to the HoF. (I just like saying his last name)

Manning's been robbed of appropriate acknowledgement before. See, e.g., Heisman Trophy.

I'm thinking that the shout-out from Jesus Christ, on Judgment Day, will mean a lot more to Manning than trophies.
