Joan Adams Mondale, the wife of former Vice President Walter Mondale who carved out a significant national and international role for herself as a tireless promoter of the arts, died Monday afternoon surrounded by her husband, sons and family members.

They used to call her mother "Joan of Art" because that was the cause or platform Joan adopted.
I guess as causes go it's not the worst, but as for every First or Second Lady having to have some cause or other -- I don't know about that.
Yeah, They thought Eleanor had the brain cancer on the run, but it came back. She was a local medai type and was very good at it.

Wow, she was 83? Announcements like this make me feel old.
Surprisingly, her Wikipedia article has about the time she visited Clinton in the White House and Monica was kept waiting, then flew into a rage when she learned about Eleanor. Would have thought that would be the kind of detail Wikipedia would prefer to have swept under the rug.
