I want to replace my old, very gunked up Dell, and would like to have W7, if possible
Oh , and Michael Dell supports the Republican Party .
They've got some good deals and their customer support is not too bad either.

No one should fear buying a Windows 8 computer which has the main problem of no start button plus when you boot up you don't see the traditional Windows desktop
All you have to do is download and install a free program that will give you back the desktop and start button. Been there and done this.

Yes, Dell went private a few months back.
They are a diversified company, not just a computer manufacturer.
Their old nitch was “we’ll build it with what you want” custom approach. The lower end is pure packaged production.
I have not rebuilt my system in a while and some of the hardware is evolving, but I still prefer to build my own system. Select known reliable hardware and build for reliability. (does not always assure results) But I run Linux too.
Never owned one of them, but had a much modified Trash 80 Mod 1 to begin with.
I have an iPad and a MacBook which I got in the last two years. They are my first apple products. I had an original IBM PC back in ‘87 or so and used Microsoft ever since. But about two years ago I switched and never looked back. It’s just simpler and software upgrades are a breeze.

Tiger Direct is who I go to too. They are pretty competitive.
Our family’s first 286 was for AutoCAD. I started on version 2... we had to upgrade the CPU with a math coprocessor. ACAD ran from a DOS prompt. Good times. These days, my office is using AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013... I hate it. Everyone ridicules me because I type the commands rather than hunting through 8 billion menus.
Laptop, Toshiba Satellite series, various models/features/price points, all on the good...better...best spectrum.
Desktop, HP Pavilion series, same story.
Availability of W7? Unknown. Programs exist to make W8 look like 7.
My nearly computer-illiterate wife has a W8 laptop, unmodified. She has no complaints. YMMV, and so might mine.
In the past, I have had IBM, Dell and HP laptops and all fell short of Toshiba (hardware shortcomings)
Don't forget to check Staples, Office Depot, etc. for laptop deals.
Bite the bullet. Get the best bargain you can on an OEM Win 8 machine, with warranty of course.
Use the Desktop view, you can tweak the colors a bit to get closer to Windows Classic. I really don’t like the standard color scheme. Makes my eyes wiggle.
The Start menu issue isn’t really an issue. It’s a modest movement with the times.
Desktops with larger screens (17”+) are required for productive home use. Spreadsheets, database, graphics and even straight coding is more efficiently managed on a large screen with traditional keyboard. Sorry Maxi-pad users, a single pad is simply not as productive as a desktop layout.
On the other hand, my iPad air is the most “requested” machine for down time in the living room.
Do yourself a favor and buy two, one for you and one for your Asawa.
I have had good luck with Ebay with some used computers. I look for a good dual or quad processor (Intel) with decent speed.. above 3GHz... I like a good fan system on my computer and yes you still need to take your computer outside and use a good air hose on it to clean it at times couple times a year. I like a decent video card (but if you don’t game, you don’t need). Make sure it has a decent size Hard Drive of above 250 or higher. I like the terabit size ones now.

My town has a WiFi service, but I have never used it.
A Belgian guy that I brought here is using it, but it seems to have problems.
The internet cafes are still available for tourist and those that have no computer.
I would not call my town a tourist area, but there are plenty of expats from many countries living here, but that is true all over the Philippines.
I have had 3 Acer brand laptop my most recen as an Intel i5 as an Intel i5 processor and six gigs ram.
A C-64 was my first computer, after the little Timex/Sinclair. This was before internet was available.
How easy is it to get Toshiba, Asus, Acer, HP, custom from Tiger Direct, etc. fixed when something goes wrong?
I’ve had a Dell desktop for a long time (I need a new computer, too), and when a couple of things went wrong, they were there the next day with the new part to fix it. Do the others have to be sent back to their manufacturers for repair?
