Study: Third-Hand Smoke Exposure As Deadly As Smoking

Exposure to surfaces and objects that have been saturated in cigarette smoke, labeled as “third-hand smoke,” may be as deadly as smoking the cigarette itself.

A new study from the University of California, Riverside finds that the third-hand smoke that has soaked into the surfaces, objects and environment around people becomes increasingly toxic over time. Third-hand smoke is defined as the second-hand smoke that is allowed to settle on objects in any environment. Non-smoking children, co-workers, spouses and friends of smokers breathe in such carcinogens left in rooms exposed to smokers.

These studies are pure BS. For this to be true the toxins in cigarette smoke would have to be as easily transmitted as the norovirus. In 1999, after one gentleman vomited in a concert hall and nearby bathroom in Wales, more than 300 people inhaled enough airborne norovirus to become ill. I doubt cigarette smoke toxins are that easily transmitted.

Sometimes, I think I should just go request a government grant to study the effects of global warming on the dangers of smoking.

Say...? What? $7MM? $8MM??

I’ll produce a VERY nice report.

Some of the comments after the article address that in detail. What about pellet stoves? What kind of harmful components reside in those pellets? One of my neighbors has a pellet stove and when I’m outside I can always tell when it’s fired up. News flash. Nobody gets out alive. Some sooner, some later. Can’t we just enjoy the time we have? Vilifying “legal” products, touting “illegal” products. Bizzaro world.

I remember when I was much younger we had to clean the yellow gunk off the inside of the windshield.

Later I was on a submarine and I had to clean the gunk off the air cleaners.

Gunk in the air from smokers is REAL.

"Studies" like this allow them to whip up more and more "smoking related deaths".

For example... Mary gets cancer at age 67. She never smoked, but did meet a guy in a bar for a drink once when she was 25. The bar had allowed smoking in their facility until 2 years prior to her 45 minute visit, but hadn't completely scrubbed the walls/ceilings after their smoking ban went into effect.

Since Mary contracted cancer later in life... they can now count her case as "smoking related" since she entered that bar which likely still had some residue laying around.

The more they stretch the facts, the higher the numbers get... which in turn allows them to count even more cancer cases as "smoking related"... which again helps them count even more people in the results.

“Wasn’t the entire second hand smoke thing recently debunked? These people are hysterical.”

You can literally buy a “study” that concludes anything you want to pay for. As a professor told me once (when I was working on his project), “The first question you ask is ‘what are you trying to prove?’” Because if you want other grants you’d better jigger the data so that it shows what they’re looking for. “Science” no longer exists. It’s just a meal ticket now.

ALL third hand smoke, or just tobacco?? Is anyone going to say that MARIJUANA smoke is harmful-second,third or fifth hand? Do they dare?
Of course if you’re stoned EVERYTHING is good-that’s the point isn’t it? Let’em legalize weed- I’ll sue the first weedhead who forces me to inhale their dope smoke.

Another example of “xxx related inuries”. My mom was carrying an unopened bottle of wine and slipped and fell shattering the bottle and severely cutting the palm of her hand requiring a trip to the ER and a lot of stitches. Voila! Alcohol related injury?

The test group mice was kept closely shaved to bare skin, while controls were not shaved or handled. The trauma and stress of shaving the mice (try shaving down to bare skin your cat) could explain the glucose and other physiological stress reactions, as well as the anxiety and hyperactivity in behavioral tests.

In the wound healing aspect, the controls and test animals were gauged with a 7 mm wide biopsy punch, which is obviously quite a different wound on a closely shaved skin vs hair covered skin, plus the "researchers" (highly motivated to show harm of 3rd hand smoke) will know which is which and how hard they ought to gauge the mice to get the results "right".

I would like to see what would happen if one were to keep shaving down to bare skin, from head to toes, these non-smoking "scientists" with a rusty razor blade, then compare them to a matching group of smokers, who were left alone, with the procedures repeated for few weeks. For better comparison to this "research", one would also have to have smokers shave and gauge with biopsy tools of their choice these "scientists" and then evaluate the results.

The original "study" is here.

Smoking related too if they find that the worker in the vineyard had smoked before handling that bottle. He may have left residue on the bottle, which she has now picked up by touching the bottle. If she gets cancer any time in the next 50 years, they can add that to the victim list of 3rd hand smoking... which is getting more dangerous by the minute.
