Sad as to just WHAT this country has turned into. "THANK You", LBJ, Wilson, FDR, Bush(s), Kennedy's, Carter, Clinton, Obama.

On the pic of Bennies Grocery - I think it’s the third one - there’s some white writing on the windows.

It seems to have a particular style. A lot of the writing in the Little Rascals had the same attributes.

Curious how it was made and if how it was applied influenced the way it looked. Anyone know? Doesn’t look like it was brushed to me, for example.

Image 11 is incorrectly captioned. It’s a photo our local Super Giant food store in Springfield, Virginia circa 1964. It represented a major change from the way we shopped for groceries prior to that, and was always busy with shoppers. If you look close, there’s a PowderMonkey in the shot. ;)

Great photos. Noticed how thin and healthy looking everyone is.

Picture 24 —

The wall of fresh chicken hanging right across from the fruit and veggies — the health inspector’s nightmare.

One improvement...I remember when fruits and vegetables used to be either “In” or “Out” of season....now it seems like everything is available all year round :-)

I clicked thru all 37 photographs and did not see a single Food Stamp. Amazing.

We have an old Piggly Wiggly in my town. I once went there to get some stuff and it was like stepping back into the 50s.

Yep. Liberals screw up everything that they come in contact with. That’s a fact.

i do not think it looks all that different... i supposed it depends on where one shops... if one goes to buy groceries from WalMart, then yes... however, places like Harris Teeter, Zanotto's, Dragers, Lowes and even Whole Foods have that aura about them... other than the prices, of course...

my brother owns a supermarket in San Jose, and it has top-notch produce, a wonderful meat department with knowledgeable employees who know their meat... a nice bakery with beautiful and tasty pastries, cakes, cookies... and no self-check out... it is smaller than the chain stores, but he does well...

One thing that’s notable is that these old grocery store photos do NOT show any “ready to eat” meanls made at the store that the families just need to heat up. The photos do show a lot of raw ingredients that you have to make into something. We’ve become a nation of people who don’t want to put effort into much of anything, including making dinner.

That first image looks like the checkout lines at my local Walmart — I wish!

They seldom have more than 3 regular checkout lines open.

Remember these ,,growing up in the country 20+ miles from town, The rolling store was a treat for the 5cent cup of ice cream and all day suckers, flour, coffee, sugar and other basic food items that had to wait for the monthly trip to town.

Almost all southern rural communities had one running once a week. Them were hard days back then.
