Sad as to just WHAT this country has turned into. "THANK You", LBJ, Wilson, FDR, Bush(s), Kennedy's, Carter, Clinton, Obama.

On the pic of Bennies Grocery - I think it’s the third one - there’s some white writing on the windows.
It seems to have a particular style. A lot of the writing in the Little Rascals had the same attributes.
Curious how it was made and if how it was applied influenced the way it looked. Anyone know? Doesn’t look like it was brushed to me, for example.

Image 11 is incorrectly captioned. It’s a photo our local Super Giant food store in Springfield, Virginia circa 1964. It represented a major change from the way we shopped for groceries prior to that, and was always busy with shoppers. If you look close, there’s a PowderMonkey in the shot. ;)

Picture 24 —
The wall of fresh chicken hanging right across from the fruit and veggies — the health inspector’s nightmare.

I’m an idiot - it’s #7. Says so right below the photo.

I was just going to post that very same picture with the caption.

you can thank to minimum wage for ending that as well as a ton of other jobs like doormen and elevator operators.

One improvement...I remember when fruits and vegetables used to be either “In” or “Out” of season....now it seems like everything is available all year round :-)

I clicked thru all 37 photographs and did not see a single Food Stamp. Amazing.

We have an old Piggly Wiggly in my town. I once went there to get some stuff and it was like stepping back into the 50s.

“Your prices are too high! Pork chops for 5 rubles? Appalling. The other butcher has them for 2 rubles.”
“So buy them from the other butcher.”
“But he has none.”
“Fine. When I have no more pork chops, I’ll charge 2 rubles also.”
