At least you get plowed. Where I live they just ignore the snow. Good thing the sport ute has four wheel drive.
May 10 Florida. Ground opened up and swallowed neighbor.
More bad news about Michigan winter:
Austin, who studies the effect of lake ice, predicts that it will have a very strong influence on the regional climate this summer, with the air conditioning [lake] effect more pronounced than usual. Typically, the lake will start warming up in late June, but it will be August before we see that this year, Austin told CNSNews.com. - See more at: http://cnsnews.com/news/article/barbara-hollingsworth/ice-expert-predicts-lake-superior-will-completely-freeze-over#sthash.flgOXNH7.dpuf
In other words, lakes that never really get warm, won’t get warm.
I spent an afternoon in Kincardine, Ont. on the east shore of Lake Huron one warm July day. I jumped off a pier into the lake. I don’t think Lake Huron ever gets what I would call warm, or even tolerable.
What I hated was hearing other people complain night and day about it.
I went swimming in Lake Superior once in September. That’s actually about the warmest time of year and it was nearly intolerable cold.
Not real crazy about the complaining either. Discussing the weather, yes. Complaining, no, because it could ALWAYS be worse. See Atlanta, GA for reference.
I really do love the changing seasons, even the snow. It's been so long since we've had such a record breaking winter with snow and cold. It seems like winters were always like this when I was a kid. I loved playing in the snow when young and was not afraid of falling. Shoveling is great exercise. LOL
The cold is a blessing. All I have to do is look at any thread about economic and societal collapse to see everyone talk about fleeing south and I know I’m better off staying put.
"Could be raining."
I agree. When it becomes really difficult to remain warm, the entitlement army is gonna be headin’ south for sure.
Usually Beer and shots happen in the shanty.
I left MI unwillingly because there were no jobs at the time we got married. Texas Instruments made an offer and we moved. Here in Texas we get only an inch and the whole place shuts down. I have to stay off the roads because no one was taught how to drive in snow. A couple years ago, we had a big snow storm that netted us maybe five inches, which was really huge. Anyways I told the neighbor boys that if they built some snowmen in the middle of the cul de sac I would smash them down with my 4x4 GMC Yukon. They built six scraped together snowmen of varying heights. I pulled my monster truck into range, revved my engine and preceded to smash those suckers flat. A good time was had by all.
And there is an abundance of fish and game even here in far southern Michigan.
I’ve got a wood stove installed in the garage and another still in the box that can be installed here in the house in a couple of hours. I’ve got a hand pump that can replace the electric one in under 20 minutes.
Well played.
We went to the store to get some food and a damn deer ran out in front of my car and I hit the bastard.
LOL.
In the mid-to-late seventies, a good part of the “rust belt” started moving into Texas. In the winter of 1975, one family from Michigan with 4 boys bought the house and acreage next door. I expected them to slowly adjust to being in their new Texas environment.
It was on a windy 30 degree overcast day and I was outside doing some chores and freezing my butt off. I noticed the boys out playing touch football without any shirts or shoes (just jeans) and having a great time. I shouted over the fence for them to put on some clothes lest they catch a cold. They stopped and came over to the fence. They began tell me about how much they liked the Texas winter and that this was picnic weather where they had come from. I was impressed.
It wasn’t too much later on blue norther day I saw them out riding horses without their shirts, only now boots and jeans. I was really impressed. They had become cowboys. They were a whole lot tougher than me.
Of course after several years passed, they did dress for the Texas winter weather. They were wearing flannel shirts and heavy coats with bermuda shorts, boots or sandals, and the baseball cap or optional stetson. /s
Great neighbors and the best bunch of kids ever.
Everybody in Michigan hunts deer whether they want to or not. I’ve bagged 3 with the car myself.
We bag a few like that in Texas. Bet you don’t have an armadillo problem in Michigan. Like hitting bowling balls on the highway. And you can’t even eat’em.
