A Cupertino woman considers it a miracle that her 3-year-old pit bull, Hammy, is still right by her side.
Last month, Hammy was rushed to a 24-hour emergency animal clinic in Campbell after she ate what turned out to be tainted food.
Emily Aldrich, Hammy's owner, said the incident occurred when she let the dog outside to go to the bathroom. She later found Hammy munching on something from a bag of food.
The food was strips of beef laced with Strychnine pellets in a Ziplock bag. Strychnine is a common type of gopher poison.
Minutes after Hammy ate the poisoned food she started going into seizures. Aldrich believes someone came into her backyard and deliberately tried to kill her dog.
"Oh my God! Why would someone do that?" she said. "You know. It was just questioning like why, how and just no understanding."
Aldrich rushed Hammy to an animal clinic where doctors pumped the dog's stomach and flushed out the poison. But minutes later, Hammy had another seizure that forced her heart to stop.
"I literally watched her die right in front of me and I felt so powerless," Aldrich said.
Aldrich said Hammy was dead for 12 agonizing minutes. But doctors wouldn't give up and managed to revive her.
"I couldn't believe it," Aldrich said. "I think my own heart stopped at that point because I was just in such shock."
Now three weeks later, Hammy is walking around and slowly getting back to her old self.
"The fact that she's still here with me is the biggest blessing that I could ever have," Aldrich said. "I never thought I would be so attached to a dog. She's my best friend."
Aldrich's family and friends have come together to raise money to help pay for Hammy's medical bills. To contribute, click here.
Makes me wonder how many of these animal lovers claim to be libertarians.
Pets are animals. They are not human beings.
They need to be treated like animals, and that includes being trained and controlled.
If they aren't, then they have no business whining when the consequences come due.
Dogs reflect their inherent nature.
I never met a lab who didn’t love water and people and to chase and catch things.
I never met a Border Collie who didn’t herd by instinct and run endlessly.
I never met a Husky who didn’t love cold weather and to pull things.
And the list goes on.
Any dog bred to fight as Pit Bulls have been, have it in them and training and a proper upbringing are no guarantees that that nature has been dealt with.
I never saw those other instinctive behaviors trained out of those other breeds. I don’t believe that aggression can be trained out of a dog either.
Let the hyper sensitive "animal lovers" misrepresent what is said and deny the truth. Rational people see the truth.
“We’re all Nazis, too”
Not-nice beasts, all of ‘em.....bring on the executions & wipe ‘em out. /S
LMAO

Wow..and scripture on your homepage
You have a bad dog....give it to a rural no kids home...
Or dose it on benadryl and dramamine then when knocked out shoot it in the head up a bit and behind the ear penetrating the horizontal cerebral mass likely to result in instant death..22 mag minimum
That is not for everyone obviously but in remote areas its the only option
Not every vet will put a pet down....just cause owner wants...not today
Poison is for cowards.... always has been
“Rational people see the truth.”
Well.
That explains your major malfunction, here.
Had you been paying historical attention, most of us decrying this act of cowardice are the ones who routinely warn everyone that dogs are dogs, regardless of breed and will “behave as dogs”, occasionally.
It’s not an issue of difference, only of degree.
A pack of untrained, undisciplined toy poodles is still a pack, capable of inflicting grievous injury.
Every single act of dogs behaving badly has only one root cause; stupid/lazy/ignorant/abusive owners.
We’re the higher life form charged with stewardship over all the beasts.
When our beasts cause harm, it’s because *we* failed, somehow.
“Real animal lovers” all know this and are not deluded by the artificial construct of “breed”.
All dogs are dogs.
All dogs have teeth.
All dogs can be dangerous.
All dogs can kill.
Anyone calculating either the possibility of danger or the likelihood of safety by size or breed is ignorant and naïve, in the extreme.
I know someone who has a pack of non-swimming, non-retrieving Labs who are a menace to anyone who gets of their car.
The only dog that ever bit me was a non-herding Border Collie.
The “breed” inclines, it does not compel.
Rational people understand these truths.
I was resist the usual Mason Dixon comment...when I looked at Chet Mrs profile page..but tks
Pit Bulls....or any tough dog

We have now and have always had, a disturbing segment of FReepers who openly advocated and even bragged about poisoning dogs.
Some got TOSed.
Some died.
Others yet remain.
This place could use a good cleaning.
We had two puppies a long time ago in a fenced in yard. Some neighbor children poisoned them. One died. The other did not. It was horrible to watch that dog die. They were mutts with no pit bull in them. And they were only three or four months old.
Sic Semper Tyrannis.
I have the biggest UV LED flashlight you’ve ever seen, thanks to the psychotic neighbor who likes antifreeze peoples’ pets.
If my security cams pick up any hint that he’s been near my fence line, I go out and scan the perimeter for residue.
So far, so good.
My condolences on your terrible loss.
Just look at it. Da ebils. Lots of da ebils.
I suppose it’s the ebil mastermind who sics the Boy on you at least once a day.....
All the dogs live in fear of her, so, yeah, she ~does~ command them, at will.

Okay, it took me a sec, LOL.

Wmfights, is there a reason you keep typing “animal lovers” in quotation marks? Do you think there’s something wrong with being an animal lover?
I’ve been one all my life and I’m certainly not ashamed of it.
You are a POS and I hope you die today.
