We've read the arguments for learning French, but let's be honest: Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, or any other language with growing global importance would be a better choice. Spanish may be the best choice of all for a second language, which is why its popularity in schools is soaring worldwide.
Here are some reasons why you should estudiar.
1. Spanish isn't a foreign language anymore. In the U.S., Spanish is rising ahead of any other non-English language at a rapid pace, with a steady flow of new immigrants from Latin America and growth in the already large Hispanic population. According to a Pew Research Center report, an estimated 37.6 million people in the U.S. speak Spanish as their first language and analysts predict the Latino population will reach approximately 128.8 million by 2060, likely making it the largest Spanish speaking country in the world. Proportionally, Hispanics will rise from around 16% of the U.S. population in 2010 to 30% by 2050. There are countless reasons for wanting to improve communications with such a big portion of the country, including things as simple as expanding your dating pool on OKCupid.
2. Learning Spanish will help your career. With such a large Latino population in the U.S. and booming Latin economies outside the U.S., employers are desperate for people who speak Spanish. There is a huge demand in the U.S. for Spanish-speakers in nursing, construction management, and media, among many other positions. Big corporations are realizing the importance of reaching a market that will represent $1.5 trillion in purchasing power in the U.S. by 2015. Meanwhile, Latin America received a record $174 billion of foreign investment in 2012, and companies everywhere are expanding there, such as PepsiCo announcing a $5 billion investment in Mexico.

I already know all the spanish I need.
.
We need to learn both Spanish to speak to our future employees and Mandarin Chinese to speak to our future bosses. :)
Nah....they need to learn English and speak it here..period.
Russian? For what purpose? Seriously.
hey no one mentioned pig latin!
English is far superior to spanish as a language..
but spanish can be good for talking to parasites..
otherwise they may think you’re a democrat..
No se habla espanol. Inglesia! Inglesia! Toto el mundo.
RE: We need to learn both Spanish to speak to our future employees and Mandarin Chinese to speak to our future bosses. :)
In the 1980’s, Mandarin Chinese above used to be Japanese. What ever happened to that?
Or Portuguese...
‘Cause since I was a high schooler, Latina babes were simply the most smoking hot women on my pasty white “radar”.
Assimilate, acclimate, procreate and raise proud American patriots.
The downside, though, is realizing how hard other languages are -- coming to understand that you probably will never make much headway in Chinese or Japanese or Mandarin once you reach a certain age.
The U.S. “Latino” population, largely, does not speak Spanish; they speak Mexican Spanish. There is a difference. If you learn real Spanish, you can understand Mexican. If you learn Mexican, you will have some difficulty with Spanish. Mexican Spanish, depending upon to whom you are speaking, is almost a creole. If youcan speak a Cajun or hatian dialect you have difficulty with French, but if you know French, you can largely understand Cajun or Haitian dialects. The problem are the idioms.
Everyone should learn Latin. With latin you have the origins of 60-70% of English word, 80-85% of Spanish, and 90 some odd percent of Italian. You will know many legal, nedical, and scientific terms.
If you know Mexican Spanish, you can get the lawn cut and order at Taco Bell.
Another thing to note is the large percentage of Mexican Spanish only speakers are not well educated. In my experience, most have not completed grade school.
I will never speak Spanish. I want English to be the only national language of the US. I hate pressing 1 for English, I want to tell these companies to stop pandering to the ILLEGALS.

In my business life here in California, I have witnessed Asians several times giving work instructions to Hispanics, in Spanish.
Last weekend it was in the form of a successful wholesale nursery owner, speaking to his Hispanic worker—in Spanish.
On average in California there is a full standard deviation of IQ difference between Asians and Hispanics; about the same difference as between whites and blacks.
It therefore falls to the more intelligent to get and use more tools, and to benefit accordingly.
What great works of art have ever been done in Spanish?
"Chico And The Man" do not count...
There are not "countless" reasons to learn Spanish. But, whatever number they come up with, I can present just as many to counter that argument.
The only reason I want to learn Spanish is so I can stand in line behind a couple latinas prattling on in Spanish, pretending not to understand, and then laugh at something that they said that’s funny so they know that the fat gringo understood everything they said.
I’ll move to Russia and learn Russian before I learn Spanish.
Not only do I refuse to learn Spanish, I aim to forget all the big English words that I know!
I’m proud to be ignorant!
