F-18 on VR training route on holiday Sunday? (Vanity)

Posted on 02/16/2014 6:22:54 PM PST by phormer phrog phlyer

I was skiing today in the middle of nowhere in WV, the area is close to a VR training route, so it is not uncommon to see tactical fixed wing. Mid morning I heard what sounded like distant rumblings of a jet, around an hour later a F-18 flew over the ski area from the NW in a hard right turn at low altitude.

This is very unusual, I can not recall anytime when there have been aircraft operating on the route on a weekend let alone a holiday weekend on a Sunday. In addition, I never saw -2. Comments appreciated, not sure what to think about this.

A guy cut loose on a weekend cross country training flight. Fairly common to send a CAT IV rag student on the road for his entire 10 hour syllabus.

Whenever I was in the field, it was Ops 24/7...don’t see why that would change.

There’s nothing odd about it.

Alas; used to see cool stuff, but they closed the local base. There was one time back in the 80’s when a bunch of helicopters, maybe ten or fifteen, went over really low and fast with no lights, on a clear moonless night. Freaky. A very, very high ranking officer and friend assured me that it never happened, then bought me lunch at the O-club.

Your FR name brings back great memories. We thought the CH-46 was old and worn out when I was a young infantry officer three decades ago. Now it’s been over 50 years since the Corps’ Phrogs first flew, and several squadrons are still waiting for the MV-22.

Tustin or El Toro? Nothing was going on. And very fast in a helo is a contradiction in terms, eat your lunch, be happy it was the 80s.

I wouldn’t have picked WV for a weekend XC. I’d be in Key West!
