HORROR! Cop instantly shoots, kills teen who answered door holding video game controller

A Georgia family is in shock following the death of their 17-year-old son, who was accidentally killed by a police officer who believed the video game controller he was holding was a gun, according to the family’s lawyer.

Christopher Roupe of Euharlee, Georgia heard a knock at the door of the family’s home last Friday night. Upon opening the door, he was immediately shot by a female police officer.

Roupe was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital.

The officer broke down it tears upon realizing her mistake, according to The New York Daily News.

She had been making a probation-related visit to the home. She thought Roupe was holding a gun, according to a statement from the police department.

Cole Law, the family’s attorney, said he believes that the officer did mistake Roupe’s video game controller for a weapon. Roupe was holding a remote controller for the Nintendo Wii when he opened the door, according to Law.

Standard-issue Wii controllers are white cylinders, but specialty controllers shaped like guns do exist. It is not yet known what type of controller Roupe possessed. (RELATED: Update: Texas teen faces 8 years in prison over Facebook comment)

Neighbors confirmed that Roupe had a Wii controller, not a gun, according to Law.

“The eyewitnesses on the scene clearly state that he had a Wii controller in his hand,” said Law, according to WSB-TV. “He heard a knock at the door. He asked who it was, there was no response so he opened the door and upon opening the door he was immediately shot in the chest.”

Roupe had plans to enlist in the Marines after finishing high school. He was involved in the ROTC program at his high school.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave while the police department investigates the matter. The family will likely file suit against the department.

[ So what? It’s not illegal to hold a gun in the United States of America, especially on your own property. Even if he had been holding a gun, that would be no excuse for killing him. ]

Shut up slave, learn to love the boot on your throat or else we will audit and harass you!!!

When police start using Millitary terms like “Boots on the ground” we are officially in a Police Millitary State....

What’s the “teen facing 8 years over Facebook comment” about?

As for this incident, cops are out of control. The bottom line is do what you’re told or get shot. In this case, the kid didn’t have a chance to do what he was told. How long has this woman been a cop?

They’ll sue the city but no amount of money will ease this family’s pain.

That's no "accident," the action was fully deliberate, but based on an error in perception.

Something is wrong with cop training when they go around killing innocent people...and dogs.

why did they have to point out that the cop was a woman?....if this was a man, it would not have been mentioned, and male cops are always shooting people around here....but they had to bring the gender thingy in....

I hope so, but it won't bring back their son.

If the cops go to a construction site, I expect a massacare, lots of power drills and other tools that could be mistaken for guns and weapons...

Great point! He asked who was at the door and got no response. What would any of us gun owners have done with our real guns? If someone rings my door bell and I don’t know who them, I will have a gun in my hand when I open the door. If I open it at all.

Sounds like this dufus cop had her gun already drawn-

I think so, too. I would also bet dollars to donuts that she employed poor trigger discipline, already had her finger on the trigger, was startled by the boy, flinched and shot him.

I have visited lots of people who always answer the door while armed, and I feel safer at their homes than in homes with no firearms.

Wii controller

Guns

It's not all that hard for an alert person to tell them apart, not to mention that the manner of holding the object should be a clue to the threat level.

The article makes it sound like she had her gun drawn when the kid opened the door. I didn't see anything in the article that said he pointed his remote control at her. It sounds like she didn't take much time to identify the threat before she opened fire on the kid.

"The officer broke down it tears upon realizing her mistake"

No one is a winner here. But really, do we all have to go around with our hands in the air these days to keep from being shot by the police?

She cried, so that makes it OK.

Next she will say she is sorry and then she can be promoted to division captain or something like that.

I believe that because of political correctness many people who should not be police are police. I met a highway patrol “resourse officer.” Totally incompenant and probably given that job because of her obvious unsuitability. But, there she was with the entire bat belt of goodies.

A friend is fond of saying, “There’s no problem that can’t be made worse by involving the police.”

Also, why are so many public employees armed? Why is the USPS buying ammo? Why does the IRS have armed SWAT agents? They can’t use a better trained specialized police unit? Public employees have become too militarized.

That was my first thought. Why would she have her gun drawn? If she didn't, then she sure reacted strangely. What a great profession LE has turned into - no need to accept any risk. Ever.
