Man Loses Job Over Twix Stuck in Vending Machine

Robert McKevitt's dollar failed him, so he used a little force

(Newser) – It's a story straight out of an episode of Seinfeld, just with an ending both more—and then less—satisfying. Last fall, a man from Spirit Lake, Iowa, decided he wanted to snack on a Twix while working his warehouse job at Polaris Industries. So Robert McKevitt inserted a dollar in the vending machine, punched in the code for the candy, and watched it get stuck midair on the spiral hook. He inserted another dollar in his quest to free it; no luck. He banged and shook the machine; ditto. And so, according to state unemployment records, he took a more extreme action: He drove an 8,000-pound forklift over, raised the machine two feet, then allegedly let it fall on the concrete floor—six times, reports the AP.

What he gained: three candy bars. What McKevitt lost: his job, five days later. And that's not all. In a Dec. 16 hearing whose outcome only last month became public, McKevitt's claim for unemployment benefits was turned down, over what the judge called a purposeful disregard for his employer's interests. But he insists to the Des Moines Register that the dropping part is false; he says he shook the machine so hard it moved away from the wall, and just needed the forklift to return it to its place. Adding insult to injury, McKevitt says he's heard "they have all new vending machines" at the warehouse.

Many years ago, I worked as a construction worker. We had to move vending machines away from the front of a store while we did some renovations at the front entrance. The machines were in the parking lot UNPLUGGED. After about 3 hours we had to put “Out of Order” signs on the machines. The “locals” were getting pissed that the machines wouldn’t work. It kept stealing their money and the machines were taking a beating.

It was not considered the safest neighborhood for us to be working in. You might be able to guess what kind of a business we were renovating.

If I did it where I work, I’d be fired for cause. Laugh it up all you want, but it’s a firing offense for anybody who takes his job seriously. In these times of high unemployment, anybody who doesn’t take their employment seriously if a fool.

If this guy really picked up a vending machine with a fork lift and dropped it repeatedly over a Twix bar, he has mental issues.

Let me guess. You two want to see this guy charged with and convicted of willful damage of a vending machine.

No, being fired for cause is sufficient. Not enough damage to charge the guy with a crime. If he had driven the fork-lift through a wall to get at the machine, then yes, charge him with a crime.

My 6 year old got his arm stuck in a candy vending machine at one of my daughters basketball game when the machine failed to deliver his candy.

That was embarrassing. He was successful in getting his kit-kat. He just couldn’t get his arm back out. We did free him after someone found my wife and I to come help him.

Not sure if it’s an urban legend but I read about a vending killing somebody who was rocking it and it fell on him, or her.

"One of the funniest Seinfelds ever."

David Puddy (enumerating various add-on charges): " . . . finder's fee . . . "

Seinfeld: "Finder's fee? The car was on the lot!"

Puddy (deadpan): "That's right."

It seem to me that if you provide a machine that steals someone’s money, it still theft and still a crime...

Thank goodness the newer machines seem to work better.

I was staying at a motel once and in the lobby near the public computers for resident use was a vending machine, it had these honey buns sold for 75 cents... hard to believe the price so I bought them and the next day and the next day.

I have never seen that brand in stores though. lol
