Nancy Lanza's assets worth a total of $64,000 - not nearly enough to satisfy the families ...

of her son Adam's 26 victims who hope to sue her estate

The estate of the mother of Newtown school shooter Adam Lanza is worth roughly $64,000, according to a Connecticut attorney who inventoried her finances, which is a devastating blow for victims of the massacre who are seeking damages over the shooting that left 27 people dead and a small town in shock.

Nancy Lanza, the mother of the disturbed shooter who bought him multiple firearms and taught him to shoot when he was just a small child, had five bank accounts worth a total of $60,000, according to an inventory of her finances filed in probate court earlier this month by attorney Samuel Starks.

The home Nancy Lanza shared with her son - where Adam Lanza fatally shot her as she was laying in her bed - has a fair market value of about $360,000. However, Lanza owes more than $400,000 on the mortgage of the home, so her estate is 'underwater' for about $40,000 on the Yogananda Street property.

Other than the home and bank accounts, Nancy Lanza's only other assets is a jewelery collection valued at about $5,000.

The inventory of Nancy Lanza's finances was first reported by the Hartford Courant. According to the paper, the 3,100-square-foot home - that has been vacant since the December 14, 2012, shooting - was appraised for more than $523,000.

However, real estate agents say it's unclear what the house could actually sell for once potential buyers realize it was the home of the man responsible for the second most-deadly mass-shooting in U.S. history....

Obie bail out? Maybe since she’s deceased she can qualify for a HARP loan. Will the “victims” make the mortgage holder pony up some money? Disgraceful.

I’m just surprised some ambulance chaser hasn’t gone after the School District or First Responders yet. I’m sure that’s coming.

It sounds like the Lanza’s are like most of the supposedly rich who live in those McMansions.

They just appear rich, when in fact, they are just in debt up to their eyeballs and are just a few paychecks away from bankruptcy.

The value of the home will be affected by the events that occurred there. Other than the Lizzie Borden Home in Fall River, most murder houses suffer steep discounts in the market.

Someone will buy it for the value of the land and tear it down.

If they are looking for deep pockets, they should sue the school district and the state of Connecticut for failing to provide armed security and declaring the school a gun free zone.

If I were on the jury in that case, they would be awarded Billions.

I assume the mother would have to be found liable before her estate could be taken to pay victims?

I agree with you about many dwellers of such places but Lanza appeared to be an exception.

$50k+ in cash is hardly living paycheck to paycheck.

A mortgage is not really a debt unless house value goes down. Unlike credit cards or student loans, there is always collateral that one can sell to eliminate the debt.

In response to a question I once asked him my lawyer told me that if,for example, you lend your car to someone and while driving it that "loanee" kills a pedestrian the heirs of that pedestrian can sue the driver *and* you,the owner. He had a name for the legal concept, which I can't recall. So be careful to whom you lend your car and be care to whom you provide firearms.

How does claiming the estate of a woman who was a victim herself heal the families of the other victims in any way?

Adam Lanza was a deeply disturbed individual who apparently suffered from sexual deviancy, violent obsessions, a broken home and was either suffering from a severe mental illness or demonic possession.

Scrounging around for the last pennies from his naive mother’s estate neither heals or prevents further incidents. Only a long hard look at how Americans raise and value their children will affect meaningful change.

Wait a minute. That’s my hard earned tax money you are giving away. The families have made enough with all of the non profits, public appearances, book deals, and movie rights. As bad as this was, the exploitation and merchandising of it is an insult to the children’s memory.
