The NFL Might Ban the Use of the N-Word on the Field
New York Magazine ^ | 2/23 | Delia Paunescu

The NFL's competition committee is expected to enact a rule at their March owners meeting that would penalize players fifteen yards if they use the n-word on the field. John Wooten, the head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, which monitors diversity in the league, told ESPN that he thinks the automatic fifteen-yard penalty should apply to first-time offenders, while second infractions should be punished with ejection. "I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we're trying to do," Wooten said. "We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room. Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere."

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome, who serves on the league's competition committee said, "We did talk about it, I'm sure that you saw near the end of the year that Fritz Pollard (Alliance) came out very strong with the message that the league needs to do something about the language on the field. So we did discuss over the last three days."

Under the possible new rule, homophobic slurs might also be outlawed because, as Wooten reiterated, "there is too much disrespect in the game."

this will doubtless accelerate the use of other terms of endearment such as “Yo Mama”

Will that ban extend to the black-on-black n-word that ends with “a” instead of “er”?

Anecdotal evidence is that Negroes call other Negroes by that epithet. The term has fallen into disuse and shame by others. What’s up with this? Will a Negro player calling another Negro player by that epithet be fined?

This is going to be interesting. Blacks are getting blasted and censored by their own political agenda by allowing the gay faction to equate their situation with civil rights. Are the racial slurs directed at whites included?

So. I’m guessing the NFL is singling out the black players here? They’re the only ones that would be using that word.

What if a player says the politically correct thing and use the phrase...”You Dirty N-word”.

Do you think that would be acceptable on the field as it is everywhere else?

I dunno. Never heard white guys call each other “how’s it going honkey?”

But “honkey”, “whitey” and “cracker” are still encouraged! Who polices this? How do you prove it? What if I’m misunderstood because I said “bigger”, “liquor”, “sicker”, “chigger”?

Now that we’ve abolished this word, what word is next? Seattle banned the words “brown bag” and “citizen” so those are next I guess.

“Under the possible new rule, homophobic slurs might also be outlawed because, as Wooten reiterated, “there is too much disrespect in the game.””

We are reaching a point to where speech will be monitored in the public square and even on the job and now with a heavy 15 yard penalty.

It is not fair to the players who must give up protected speech simply when they go to work on a Sunday afternoon.

Once some rule such as this is introduced in the NFL such rules will soon come to other people’s workplace.

This is going to add even more hilarity to what the NFL has already become. Every time a Washington player shouts, “Let’s go Redskins”, they’re going to be penalized 15 yards! They’re going to have to apply the penalties during each following set of downs. LOL! Polish up your pink cleats and pass the popcorn. This is going to be a hoot!

What about the 'O' word?

I'm pretty sick of hearing Omaha.

One would think that the ban on unsportsmanlike conduct would cover the use of such language.

This should be fun. A player is penalized for speech. The opposing coach throws the red flag, it goes to the monitor/lip readers. Referees are already working on a visual code for “illegal use of the n-word.”

With Michael Sam’s debut, will yet another penalty be linked to the f-word? Will there be no end?

Any guesses how long it'll take before that referee "visual code" starts being used in the streets? How long after that will use of the "visual code" be considered an offensive gesture?
