Soaring numbers of ‘wolf breed’ dogs are being abandoned by owners unable to cope with the pets - which have become popular after featuring in cult films and television shows such as Twilight and Game of Thrones.
Charities including The Dogs Trust say hundreds of dogs such as Malamutes, Huskies and Sarloos were given up last year because their demands for attention and exercise are proving too much.
And last week, six day-old Eliza-Mae Mullane was mauled to death by her parents’ pet Alaskan Malamute at their home in Pontyberem, Carmarthenshire.
Police are currently still investigating the circumstances of the tot’s death and have not destroyed the dog.
The Dogs Trust, Britain’s largest dog rescue charity, has experienced a three-fold rise in wolf breed dogs brought to its rehoming centres.
The charity says it is ‘gravely concerned’ about the situation, saying unscrupulous breeders are also to blame, for selling the dogs to people in town-centre flats who were out at work all day and left them unattended.
Last year the trust took in 261 abandoned wolf-type dogs — up from 78 in 2010.
Although known for being friendly, affectionate and loyal, wolf breed dogs are also prone to separation anxiety and extreme boisterousness.

We rescued a half-Husky dog about 14 years ago. She looks more like Husky than the Aussie Sheppard that is her other half. Anyway, I thought she would be great because I could take her out and run three miles or so with her every day.
She is a wonderful dog but is one of the laziest creatures I have ever encountered next to our cats. No one in our family could get to to walk or run past the Library which is exactly a half mile from our home. If we try to take her further she sits down and locks her front legs. Once she does that she cannot be moved unless we turn around towards home.
Her favorite thing to do is lay in the Family Room at our feet. Boisterous my rear end!

great dogs, friendly, strong, but not too bright...
they need lots of room to run... if you live in a subdivision, do not get one, it is not fair to the animal..
they will dig, it is breed into them, they cannot be taught not to...
they are working animal, and crave and need lots of exersise....
I went to a farm years ago where the owner was breeding wolf/Great Dane mixes.
I loved my Husky. The neighborhood’s cat owners weren’t real fond of her, though...

However, I was not compelled to go out and buy myself something big and ferociously furry, such as an Anatolian Shepherd or Tibetan Mastiff because of them.

Then again, if they actually knew dog stuff, they wouldn’t be cramming Malamutes into apartments in the first place.

One of the saddest things I ever saw was a biker chick who lived downtown with a small yard full of Huskies.
She thought they looked like wolves and therefore, ‘went with the biker image’.
They were skinny from anxiety, frustrated and miserable.
Those howls she loved to listen to were cries of despair.
The second saddest was some people who had full blooded wolves in a very small fenced yard.
They gave them old sofas to play with.

The last I saw of them, the elder bitch had a huge tumor hanging off of her belly but no vets would treat her, even if they could’ve gotten her to one.
That’s no life for a wolf.
It’s been years ago since I was by there and I hope they all have gone to a better place.

Poor babies...I can’t stand it. It’s clueless people with unrealistic animal fantasies. Sometimes it’s dogs or wolves, or sometimes an idiot decides he thinks tigers are cool and decides to get one for his apartment. It’s always the animals who pay for the stupidity.
You’d think “rare breeds” would be spared this, wouldn’t you?
When Bunny the Ibizan Hound won the Hound group at Westminster 2 years running, *everybody* wanted one of those elegant, exotic dogs.
For most people, it was the first time they’d ever seen one.
Not long after, when I was on the Ibizan Hound rescue committee, they were flooding into rescue.
People bought them and soon discovered that it was very much like having an antelope/jackal cross living in your house.
They are NOT for everyone...they’re a breed barely suitable for anyone but a select group prepared to deal with all the craziness that comes with them, frankly.
I’ve had them for 24 years and every one of them came from horrid situations.
Back when I had my first one, finding somebody who had another one was nearly impossible.
Now, there’s scores of litters, every year.
Maybe more, by now...I’ve stopped keeping track.
It was too terrible to watch.
I know.
A guy not too far from here had a veritable personal zoo on his property for a long time.
I’ll never forget the week that lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) were wandering loose when his fence failed.
He eventually passed away.
I don’t know what happened to the critters.
And to make another poster’s ideological point, he was a gay liberal guy.
You know the rule.

Not only are they STUPID, but they are just plain LAZY. having a dog is not the same as a hamster or a gold fish.
We have 2 acres, but a very small house and so when we lost our lab/chow mix last summer we knew a smaller dog would be the order of the day when we decided it was time. The Heinz57 pup we fell in love with in December loves running and being outside, but she will probably never even get to 20 pounds.
I have owned several Lab/mutt mixed dogs, all of them throw aways. They are probably the easiest dogs to own although mine are never allowed inside.
They probably would not be so good indoors but they love to roam around the yard. Good watch dogs except they are a little too friendly.
