Soaring numbers of ‘wolf breed’ dogs are being abandoned by owners unable to cope with the pets - which have become popular after featuring in cult films and television shows such as Twilight and Game of Thrones. Charities including The Dogs Trust say hundreds of dogs such as Malamutes, Huskies and Sarloos were given up last year because their demands for attention and exercise are proving too much. And last week, six day-old Eliza-Mae Mullane was mauled to death by her parents’ pet Alaskan Malamute at their home in Pontyberem, Carmarthenshire. Police are currently still investigating the circumstances of the...
  • (UConn)College’s husky dog logo promotes rape, says (feminist) student

The new logo for the University of Connecticut’s sports teams is a terrifying husky dog that calls to mind images of sexual assault, says one student. The new logo was unveiled last week, receiving mixed-to-negative reviews from UConn fans who preferred the older, cuter husky dog. But one student went much further, criticizing the new, meaner logo for being a pro-rape symbol. In an open letter to UC President Susan Herbst, self-described feminist student Carolyn Luby wrote that the redesigned team logo will intimidate women and empower rape culture. UConn basketball coach Geno Auriemma said the logo “is looking right...

Police are investigating the slaughter of 100 husky dogs used during the 2010 Winter Olympics to pull tourist sleds in the Canadian ski resort of Whistler, authorities said Monday. The grisly killings were reportedly carried out by one worker over two days in April 2010 with a shotgun and a knife, with reports of injured dogs crawling out of a mass grave. Local media said the dogs were killed because business slumped in the two months following the Games and they were no longer needed by tourism companies Outdoor Adventures and Howling Dogs, which sell dog-sled rides to tourists.

SAN ANTONIO Sometimes things don't work out perfectly. So much can happen from the blueprint to the bouquets that just getting the chance to win a national championship is a blessing. But to win another championship in the same fashion, so fluently, so flawlessly, so fabulously, is something the sport may never see again. The magnificent run to a seventh national championship for the nation's pre-eminent college basketball program ended with an unusual but emphatic 53-47 win over Stanford at The Alamodome. Maya Moore, the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, scored 18 of her game-high 23 points in...

The best it got for Washington's football program under Tyrone Williams was a five-win season in 2006. SEATTLE -- Washington coach Tyrone Willingham said Monday he will step down at the end of the 2008 season. The embattled Washington coach fell to 0-7 on Saturday after a 33-7 loss to Notre Dame. He is 11-32 overall in his four seasons with the Huskies. Washington currently has a nine-game losing streak dating back to...

When Curtis Williams took the field for the Huskies' 2000 season opener, the University of Washington's media guide described him like this: Senior, strong safety, 5-foot-10, 200 pounds. Named, in 1999, the team's best hitter. Led team in solo tackles. Went to high school in Fresno, Calif., where he was a top recruit. The seventh of eight kids. Pursuing a degree in American ethnic studies. Here's what the media guide didn't say: When Williams played against Idaho, he had a warrant out for his arrest. He'd been arrested every year he was here: 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000. He was...

Self-serving speech I was in attendance last Saturday at the commencement activities at the University of Washington. I was both embarrassed and angered by the pontification and obvious self-importance of Rep. Dicks. Never could I have imagined a commencement speaker at a major university being booed and heckled while speaking to the graduates. Then again, I could never have imagined anyone giving such a self-serving, self-glorification speech as he did. A speaker at such an event is supposed to inspire the graduates who are now going out into the world to seek their own destiny. They did not come to...

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- If there was any question over who's the dominant team in women's basketball, there should be none now. It's Connecticut, as simple as 1-2-3. With a fast start, key contributions from everyone and the incomparable Diana Taurasi leading the way, Connecticut beat Tennessee 70-61 Tuesday night to become just the second school to win three consecutive women's titles. It was far from easy, but the Huskies had what it took to hold off the Lady Vols and win their fourth championship in five seasons -- further confirmation that UConn has supplanted Tennessee as the top program...

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Led by 24 points from All-America center Emeka Okafor and 21 from Ben Gordon, the Connecticut Huskies outclassed Georgia Tech 82-73 on Monday night to win the championship many predicted they'd get from the very start of the season. They looked like champions from beginning to end, running when they wanted, controlling the middle at other times, grabbing just about every loose ball and making the Yellow Jackets look ordinary. UConn became the first team since the 1996 Kentucky Wildcats to win the title after being ranked first in the preseason. The Huskies wound up on...

(Hartford-AP May 30, 2003 7:30 AM) _ There's a state insect, flower, animal and shellfish. So why not a mascot? The state Senate doesn't think that's such a bad idea. Senators passed legislation yesterday that would make the UConn husky dog Connecticut's official mascot. Senator Joseph Crisco Junior said UConn has brought the state so much acclaim, the Husky should be the state's mascot. Not everyone was convinced. Senator Judith Freedman questioned why other Connecticut school mascots were not considered for the honor. She suggested having a contest to decide. The bill passed overwhelmingly and moves to the House for...
