A Northern California couple out walking their dog on their property stumbled across a modern-day bonanza: $10 million in rare, mint-condition gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree.

Nearly all of the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847 to 1894, are in uncirculated, mint condition, said David Hall, co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which recently authenticated them. Although the face value of the gold pieces only adds up to about $27,000, some of them are so rare that coin experts say they could fetch nearly $1 million apiece.

At a price of $1350/troy oz, the happy couple found 20 troy oz.

Look at how shiny and clean those gold coins are in there.

It’s almost like someone minted them yesterday and stuck them in there.

Congrats to the finders, but I am having trouble grasping why someone who made such a find would tell anyone, let alone leak it to the media. Bad move IMHO.

It was $27,000 face value. That would be equal to 2,700 eagle coins or 1306 troy ounces of gold. Just the gold would be $1.76 million before the numismatic value of the coins are considered.

If I ever found a hoard, nobody would ever hear of it. I would quietly sell it off, bit by bit.
