Air strikes on Admiralty Islands
Sunday, February 27, 1944

In the Admiralty Islands... There are American air strikes on Momote and Lorengau in preparation for a reconnaissance in force. The troops to be employed in the operation are embarking in Oro Bay.

FINLAND: 600 Soviet bombers raid Helsinki for 12 hours last night.

EAST CHINA SEA: Submarine USS Grayback sunk by a Japanese carrier-based aircraft. There are no survivors.

U.S.A.: Destroyer USS English launched.

Submarine USS Besugo launched.

ATLANTIC OCEAN: Sailing ship Rod el Farag sunk by U-407 at 33.48N, 34.51E.

Sloop HMS Woodpecker foundered while under tow to port after torpedo damage.

The bomber and fighter and airman losses of the week (3,500) are staggering to the home front, I am sure.

Yes, the Big Week losses were staggering, although not as bad if you consider how many more sorties this week saw than a regular week. But the German losses were worse and they have real trouble replacing them. They are also pulling fighters back into Germany to defend the Fatherland from the air attacks. It all contributed to air supremacy over Northern France by the time of D-Day.
