After the fire, the team found, a handful of earthen pyramids were built in the East St. Louis precinct, but the construction of wooden structures stopped. After the conflagration, new code ordinances were ramrodded through the Council by the Fire Marshall.
They also promptly banned lamps, torches, and candles in barns.
Since nobody was certain of the individual culprit's identity, all the milkmaids, and the 2 dairy owners, were put to death as an abject object lesson, and the cows were cursed by the priests, and driven deep into the forest, to never be seen again.

:’) The town was either sacked by outside interlopers, or (as apparently happened in Chaco Canyon) there was a social schism that got worse and worse and finally turned violent.

Cahokia is right on the way west. Before getting excited about crossing the river and visiting the big arch, take time to stop by Cahokia........ it is truly amazing.
At it’s zenith, Cahokia is believed to have been more populous than London.
