The research might lead to the development of a drug that could mimic the protective effect of these mutations. Researchers believed the results could open new ways of preventing this devastating disease.

This is a hopeful development for people with other genetic illnesses -- so they don't have to go through life having been "born that way."

It’s Type I diabetes that most are “born with”. This is Type II and many people, even those in good shape with good habits develop it at some point in their later life. There are a couple of tyypes of Type II that are either insulin dependent or insulin resistant. My body cells stopped properly processing sugars so I’m insulin resistant and take a med that helps to process the sugars. Hope this works out. I didn’t take meds for it until after about 7 years when diet and exercise weren’t completely addressing the problem anymore. I’d like to be off the meds again.

Just curious...how do you know if you have those different types of type 2?

Discussed it with my doctor. The insulin resistance was determined partly because my insulin levels were normal but my blood sugar was higher than normal. Insulin would not do anything for me because my insulin levels were already adequate. Diet and exercise kept what was a fairly low level “high” blood sugar down to normal. When the blood sugar levels started to creep up again he put me on a med that helps the body process blood sugar and that works pretty well. My sister-in-law also developed Type II but she takes insulin.

Skinkinthegrass and metmom, thanks for each ping, but I rarely check pings to me lately. I check my FReepmail fairly more frequently these days. I found my first link before I searched and and found BenLurkin's thread.

IMHO, check the new blood pressure guidelines. Chek out, at least, the abstract.
