I've Received a Copyright Infringement Notice at my business..what do I do?

I received a notice of Copyright Infringement at my office today. It says someone downloaded a file called Let It Snow on 2/22/14 at 7:49GMT and the ip address listed is 173.23.1.91. I am really concerned and don't know what my first step should be in combating this problem. Does anyone have any advice about this, I would greatly appreciate any help with this matter.

The notice should tell you what steps to take and/or who to contact.

Mediacom?

Is that a software company or internet provider?

We have changed our password a couple of times and gotten letters after each change. I am thinking about taking the wi-fi out and running cable only.

Are you using WEP encryption? If so, change it to WPA. WEP is easily cracked, if Youtube videos are any indication.

Are you broadcasting publicly accessible WiFi? Do you have logs that could point to a specific workstation/user? I don’t suppose you have in house IT, else you wouldn’t be asking about this here.

I would consult your ISP to see whether they have any information, and or check with your attorney.

I had a relative that got one of these for downloading a movie, and not only was it legit, he had to pay them $,$$$.

Dear Louis:
After 20 years in business for myself I would like to share with you some advice I got from my late father, who held TWO PhDs and was otherwise a genius. I have abided by these words and they have served me well.
Ask them to sue you if they want to.
They will not.
If they do, deal with it then.

It looks like the owner of Mediacom is from just across the Strait of Messina from Sicily.

Anyone can send you a letter saying anything. Until you get served round bin it and move on. Feel free to send them a letter back (perhaps from your lawyer) telling them the same.

Did you change your router’s admin password? It is usually something like password.

Go see a lawyer who specializes in copyright. A consult is usually cheap.

ANY answer that does not include go see a lawyer can get you in a world of trouble. It may be nothing, but seeking legal advice from a non-lawyer is a monumental error.

I found this link pretty quickly.

IMHO, WiFi is not something I would use in a network where I cared about security, unless I really put some serious effort into securing it.

If the notification was by email then a 99.9% probability it is a scam. Just ignore it. Don’t respond at all.

Also, I would think they would first of all need an affidavit from your Internet provider stating who that IP number was assigned to at the time of the alleged infraction. Something they would probably not provide without a court order unless a potentially violent crime was involved.

Otherwise there is no proof it was you so that is something that would probably be covered in the notification.

You can download all you want. It is the uploading or SHARING that gets you the bite.

Check out the law firm listed as the sender.

I am leaning the same way that many here that it’s a scam, but you should check it out, just in case.

I would tell them to check with the spooks at the NSA first.
