The Crimean War (October 1853 - February 1856) was a conflict between the Russian Empire and an alliance of the French Empire, the British Empire, the Ottoman Empire. The war was part of a long-running contest between major European powers for influence over territories of the declining Ottoman Empire.

The Crimean War (October 1853 - February 1856)
Historic in that it was also the first conflict to be “photographed”...
Not hard to understand Putin’s reaction. It was totally predictable. Obama is totally out of his league and Putin knows Obama will cut and run. the Russians have a history behind this that there is no way they will back down.
The low information voters also can’t comprehend that Russia will fight to the death if there is a threat to them having a Black Sea Fleet.
....”This is a confrontation where Russians see the Europeans trying to colonize them”.....
Well sort of....It’s really the USA siding with Europe to get as many nations under Nato and or other “controlled” blocks the West and Europe can control. Which under NAto they are protected from Russian influence....
Putins not going to have NATO in it’s own back yard, and you can’t blame him considering his ports and the oil....as well as through the waters these are shipped.
It’s also another reason we saw “BRICK” come together and the ME nations converge into their groups....’OPEC’...League of Arab Nations etc.
All of these seeking control and power.
IMO.....As I’ve well stated for a long time...no matter what is going on on the World Stage, never take your eyes off Russia or China especially when there appears to be a diversion.
... Russians see the Europeans trying to colonize them.
Ya got that right. From Napolean to Hitler, Russia will always look after its own. Unfortunately, they no longer have the Soviet Socialist Republics to serve as a buffer zones. I guess they learned a lesson from Afghanistan, don’t waste anymore effort on the ‘Stans’ - former SSR’s that are firmly Muslim. But fight to the death for the rest...
The Russian culture is one of extreme suffering and sacrifice where at least hundred million perished in 150 years. Add to that the heritage of Crimea and you know they will not back down regardless of the sacrifice. The Obama heritage is to cut and run every time. This situation is very, very, very serious. The Russians have the opportunity to now stick it to the Europeans just like 150 years ago. It is my understanding that Poland and Hungary are now terrified they are next. Obama will do nothing.
Charge of the Light Brigade
Siege of Sevastopol
The thin red line
Balaclava
Raglan sleeves
Florence Nightingale
The Crimean War is often over-looked, but much of its history had made it into our cultural consciousness, even if we can’t place the time and place.
Whether you say Europe and the US, to the Russians Crimea goes back 150 years. I don’t think they make a distinctions. they just know this is a 150 year fight.
For 60 years the Crimea has belonged to the Ukraine so the term “back down” is not really appropriate in describing Putin. The Russian dictator is simply using the weakened and troubled Ukrainian situation to wage a war of aggression. Otherwise why didn’t Putin agitate about the Crimea years ago? They already had Sevastopol and their other ports on the Black Sea. Putin is simply a fascist and he does what fascist do.
That’s where we get the term balaclava from...
the soldiers wore them in those battles in that freezing cold Chosen type winter..
a knitted hat long enough to go over the complete head and cover the mouth nose and all with a hole for the eyes...
we wore them in the winter when we were kids...
they were warm but the area by our nose and mouth would get damp from our breathe and then get cold and swampy and frosty..
I think Ralphie wore one in Christmas Story..
:)
You cannot underestimate the history of Crimea and how the Europeans and Russians kept beating the crap out of each other. There is a power vacuum and Putin is taking advantage of it. If he can take Ukraine, he can control 60% of Europe’s natural gas supplies. How is that for screwing the Europeans into the ground? He knows Obama will do absolutely nothing.
My point is if the USA had not gone in to bankroll the uprising in Ukraine...and Putin did warn the US to keep their hands off...then Putin would not be doing what he’s doing now.
Do keep in mind Putin could have acted before the Ukrainians outed their “elected” President...he waited until it was obvious the “creeps” were getting into the game..(and they were).
Putin doesn’t stand by nor play games when it comes to those those who are not only undesirables...but are indeeed a threat to the stability of a nation.. The people over there aren’t like we are nor do they see democracy the way we do. The fact they outed an elected President testifies to that.
IMO Chimea should simply go under Russian control..end of story. Ukraine will always be a divided nation....they just need other nations to stay out of their affairs and that won’t happen because of Ukraines location on the world stage.
....The transfer of oil through the waterways will always have priority over the peoples will. Both from Russian and Europes prospective.
This is not the end. The world economies are falling apart. Gold will probably head above $2000 this year. Gold is the only asset class that the more it goes up the worst things get. This is only step 1 in Russia. This year 2014 does not bode well for the world. there will be a lot of shared brutality and suffering.
We’ll Cri me a river.
Nothing to see here. Just typical Ruski behavior.
Weakness in politics creates a vacuum, and obummer is sucking big time.
Nothing has improved since he was elected, and the idiots who voted for him can see no wrong.
The events of the Crimean War do not support the statement that Russia is worried that Europe wants to colonize it. The war was fought for three reasons. It was a showdown between France and Russia over who was the protector of Christians within the Ottoman Empire and who was the European guardian of Jerusalem. Britain’s interest was to prop up the tottering Ottomans as a counterweight to Russia, all part of the Great Game. It was also an opportunity for Napoleon III to garner Britain as an ally in the balance of power game in Europe. The evidence of it not worrying Russia all that much is that Russia fought the war in a limited fashion. Russia did not commit the military force it could of to the war. Russia was actually more concerned about British moves in the Baltic than the Crimea. The war was limited to the area around Sevastopol, and after the city fell, a peace was negotiated and the status quo was restored.
Believe it or not, the most lasting legacy of the Crimean War was the unification of Italy. The Kingdom of Sardinia sent troops to fight alongside the French and British, thus solidifying its alliance with France. With the French alliance the Austrian grip on Italy was shattered at Solferino in 1859.
