Kansas Walmart customer loses tooth after cursing at self-checkout machine

WICHITA, Kan.,A fight broke out a Kansas Walmart in Wichita on Monday afternoon after a customer became frustrated with a self-checkout machine and began cursing at the device.

The 36-year-old man had difficulty completing his transaction and held up the line, much to the chagrin of an unnamed 35-year-old Hispanic male.

Capt. Doug Nolte told the Wichita Eagle that the Hispanic man confronted the fuming customer and they engaged in a dispute that continued outside of the store. Once the altercation spilled outside, a 40-year-old black man got involved and punched the cursing customer in the face.

The punch knocked out one of his teeth. Nolte said that the man, who was white, started “throwing out some racial slurs after the fight started.” According to Nolte, the language “heightened the confrontation.”

Once police arrived on the scene, the only man left was the one who lost his tooth.

I’ve cursed many a times at Walmart self checkout machines. They’re about the worst out there. Nothing ever weighs right, so you’re constantly having to tell the damn things to skip the weighing, and pretty soon it shuts down and calls an attendant.

“I wouldn’t dare try to use one if I had a cart full of items.”

The worst time for me when I was checking out a cart full of light bulbs right before the ban and missed a little bitty sign that said the machine I was using wouldn’t take cash and I didn’t find out until I tried to pay cash; had to go to another machine and do it again.

But I don’t have too many problems like that anymore at Walmart because I quit shopping there because the shelves are always empty.

Back before I went to all cash, my credit cards (and those of many others) would never scan at the local Walmart unless the clerk went through convolutions like puttint the card in one of the checkout bags and scanning it. I think the microswitches were worn out on ALL the scanners, but Walmart refused to replace them, thus resulting in huge frustrations for clerks and customers alike.

No problem now, though. I don’t shop at Walmart anymore because the shelves are always one half empty.

"the shelves are always empty"

I've been noticing that at more than one 'big box' store here lately. I know it isn't due to strong sales, because there's usually more employees at most of those places than shoppers. It's as if they didn't restock after Christmas or something.

Those self checkout machines are TERRIBLE

I suspect you are over reacting and exaggerating......I find them very convenient.

I use self checkout all the time, I’ve found the places most likely for them to not work are the places with incompetent employees and I don’t want to go there anyway. What’s great is because large chunks of society still have this fear of computers there’s generally no line so you can bang through much faster. I’m so good with those things once the “observer” offered me a job as a cashier.

I never use self checkout in any store. My wife asked why. I told her, “I don’t work here.”

When the self serve card readers were first introduced I would hand my card to the clerk and they would point to the machine.
I would (sarcastically) remark..
“If I wanted to swipe cards I would have your job. - By the way..What do you think happens to your job when EVERYONE uses that thing?” and maybe “Speaking of job why didn’t you question my non signature? I would think you had a reason for turning it over?”

Love it when they used to say “Well, you have to sign it.” I would respond with “What good does it do for me to sign it in front of you?”

Admittedly enough of them act and look like they would rather have the machine than them standing there....
