Fishermen find century-old postcard in a bottle in Baltic

BERLIN, A postcard dated May 17, 1913, and found in a bottle by German fishermen appears to be the oldest such message ever found.

Konrad Fischer, captain of a fishing boat from Schleswig-Holstein, told Kieler Nachrichten, a local newspaper, that he was about to throw the bottle back in the sea when someone told him it was not empty, the Local.de reported.

"When I saw the date I got really excited," he said.

The postcard, from Denmark, had German stamps on it. It was signed by Richard Platz and addressed to his own home in Berlin with a message asking the finder to put it in the mail.

The Guinness Book of World Records lists the oldest previous message in a bottle as 97 years, found in 2012.

Fischer said his previous finds during his 50 years as a fisherman have been more alarming, including mines, bombs, torpedoes and a body.

Seriously, they look too authentic.
You sound rather jaded - I've spent a lot of time commercial fishing and that's what working men look like, not George Clooney in that perfect storm flick.

The cigar was a perfect touch.

Totally.

I also have no doubt that regardless of the fishermen being German, they have a New England accent and talk just like the charter boat guy in Jaws.

If an American found it, and the address was in the United States, the post office would have asked for additional appropriations for additional manpower, fuel, HR resources, and cost-of-business expenses. The teamsters would have asked for an investigation as to why the post office is allowed to compete with teamster-supported businesses, and the police unions would have demanded a police escort be sent. Hillary Clinton would have asked whether it mattered or not whether the post card was delivered, and Obama would have said that it was President Bush’s fault that the postcard was not found during the Bush presidency. Michelle would have demanded that such post cards not be delivered until the nutrition and diets of postal workers were determined to be correct. Joe Biden would want it not delivered until it could be determined that everyone could read equally, and whether or not it is written in cursive. And Eric Holder would want the card held until it was determined whether or not it could come across the U.S. boundaries with the same opportunity that other mail from other countries enjoyed.

Men of tough profession, they are genuine, how can I tell, the guy on the far right is smiling from ear to ear, they all are smiling but that guy really has it going on.

This is the kind of story which I believe should be saved until
the text of the message can be published or an explanation
of why it cannot be published be included in the story.

That was my thought. Everything is perfect central casting. All the ‘props’ are there, the half smoked, partially wet cigar, the plain jacket, the five day grey stubble. They all participate in the discovery, man number three pulls the scrolled message out of the bottle. The camera perspective is below eye level, and invites the viewer to share the moment with the men. A great moment of discovery if true, a well crafted vignette if it’s not. The song that comes to mind is Jim Croce’s ‘Time In A Bottle” with his acoustic guitar.

Go to a seaside bar in Gloucester and you will see many weather-beaten men like that. Stay away from the Crow's Nest however, that place is now nothing but a tourist trap thanks to that "Perfect Storm" book/movie.

Kind of what like happened to the Bull and Finch bar in Boston after the Cheers TV show came out.

Those guys look like actors playing fishermen. Seriously, they look too authentic.

It's the clothing. Put them in, e.g., business suits or any other professional clothing, and they wouldn't look like fisherman anymore.

Regards,

And the message says "So long, and thanks for all the fish."

If there was a bottle deposit sticker on that glass ...I'd be very suspicious.

A well set up shot, to be sure. But that boat crew looks as genuine as they come. Except for the captain’s cap (Should be a Seahawks basebal cap) They could be any seine boat crew here in SE Alaska.
