Mysterious new man-made gases pose threat to ozone layer
BBC News ^ | 3/9/14 | Matt McGrath

Scientists have identified four new man-made gases that are contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer.

Two of the gases are accumulating at a rate that is causing concern among researchers.

Worries over the growing ozone hole have seen the production of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases restricted since the mid 1980s.

But the precise origin of these new, similar substances remains a mystery, say scientists.

Lying in the atmosphere, between 15 and 30km above the surface of the Earth, the ozone layer plays a critical role in blocking harmful UV rays, which cause cancers in humans and reproductive problems in animals.

Scientists from the British Antarctic Survey were the first to discover a huge "hole" in the ozone over Antarctica in 1985.

Ummm....we banned CFCs as a sure fire way to close that ozone hole so it couldn’t possibly be there anymore. /sarcasm

Liberals are morons.

My bet is that Dupont’s patent on R22 is about to expire, so they are getting ready to outlaw it to save the ozone layer. Again.

Let me translate this article for you. They killed R-12 because the patent ran out for DuPont so they could replace 99 cent cans for $15 cans and the Ozone hole hasn’t changed in 40 years so we gotta find something else to eff with your life. If it wasn’t explosive, I would love to switch house and cars to Butane for air conditioning.

Once upon a time we used to have "Styrofoam boxes for the Ozone layer"

I wish I could get a McDLT... I mean, the hot side stayed hot and the cool side stayed coooool, for crying out loud.

Thanks a lot, jerk!

Keep on Rockin' in the Free World...

When it was shown Catalytic Converters made Acid Rain worse, “acid rain” was swept under the rug.

It’s like California Condors and Golden Eagles. When it turned out the wind farms were killing the remaining few off, the birds became no big whoop. In fact, Obastard just signed a 30-year exemption for the windmill industry to the Endangered Species Act.

This is what happens when liberal fantasies collide. One wins, the other loses and is never heard from again.

I’m still waiting for the forests in the northeast to die off due to acid rain.

There are NONE!!

The “ozone layer” is a self-healing process.

IF there were “holes” then more radiation would pass through the atmosphere, striking the waters covering the earth, and “POOF!”, more ozone is created.

It’s a natural 3 -5 week process and has NEVER been a problem.

Yes, this was big deal when I was in highschool in the 90s, they sure pushed it hard then. I’m surprised they’re already back to it. Turns out they were wrong then too.

Ozone is not created by UV hitting water, it’s generated when UV strikes an oxygen (O2) molecule. The two oxygen atoms split and each recombines with an adjacent oxygen molecule to form O3 (ozone). O3 is inherently unstable generally reacts with something else (oxidation), shedding its extra atom.

Since that’s a graphic representation of what I said, I’m unclear why I would argue with them.
