Hello Freepers, I am looking to buy a new office chair and was looking for recommendations/suggestions, and endorsements. Advice about chairs to avoid is welcome too. I don't have any odd requirements to speak of. I just want a chair that swivels, rocks and has some height adjustment. I am about 6'3", and weigh 207 lbs so I'd probably want a "big/tall" version.Obviously I want comfort and good ergonomics. I posted this in the "computer" topic because I figured those of you computer guys/gals that spend copious amounts of time in front of a machine would have unique knowledge. Also, suggestions on good sources for purchase welcome too as out here in the woods the only options are Office Depot, and other chain stores. I'd like to keep the budget around $500 or less.
Thanks in advance for your help
Millions of satisfied Herman Miller Aeron desk chair customers can't be all wrong. It's been one of the most popular model 'sit all day' desk chairs for a decade or so, and may be the biggest selling ergo-metric desk chair in history.
Because it was high-end and popular, all of the dot-com companies bought them in bulk, and hundreds or thousands of companies went under with bulk inventories of new or lightly-used Aerons.
It was/is available in a big size, has height adjustments, is breathable, and has good lumbar support.
If you Google the Aeron, you can buy it new, but it's slightly above your price-point.
Because so many are out there, you should be able to find a new or lightly-used one on Craigslist or eBay with relative ease, even this long after the dot com bust.
Just a thought.
Does Bad Joe’s wife still sell his chair?
Ah. We think alike. I was typing my answer when you responded.
I needed an orthopedic office chair. SweetiePalm was looking around and found myergohealth.com
When I called the company I got Khris Devoto (Senior Ergonomic Specialist)

Their chairs are NOT cheap. They are very high end, strong, and built for YOU. They can be adjusted sixty ways to Sunday. The set-up video take about 45 minutes to complete and you will need an assistant. When you get through it's perfect.
My chair was $1500 and came with a full money back guarantee. When Khris called me to see how the chair was the first thing I said was, "You can't have it back."

My husband has a $1000 leather office chair — swivels, rocks, adjusts, etc. It’s nice. Just as nice, however, are the $180 leather office chairs that I got for myself at Office Depot (I have one at the office and one at home). I was developing blood clots in my legs from perching on an antique ‘Baltimore’ with a rush seat and hard bar across the front which is why I bought 2 new chairs for myself.
I LOVE it. I want one of those!
I got a very comfy Global (top quality, better than Staples crap) ergonomic executive fabric chair, in an upgraded fabric, from http://www.zerbee.com/?atrkid=V1ADW3B824E98-2409216366-k-zerbee-23741884686-b-g-m-1t1&gclid=CK2ljuuvob0CFeMSOgodzx4APA. Then I didn’t have to pay tax or shipping to NYC.
I purchased one down at Walmart recently that seems to work just fine. About $139 or so. Similar to the one described in post #2. I believe it was labeled as a Broyhill. There is a less expensive one at about $99 but it has less padding in the front.
Look for one with a metal base and metal armrests.
I had bought some of those with the plastic base, and it lasted about a year.
Replaced with one with a metal base, but plastic arms, and one of the arms broke.
Found one with metal base and metal arms as a Walmart special buy and it has lasted (so far — I am sitting in it now) about 6 years).
Metal bases are difficult to find. You might have to special order one. They do add $35 to $50 to the cost.
When it came time to buy a personal office chair, I bought a Herman Miller Embody, and, a decade later, I could not be happier.
I think what several of us are saying is, SoG, is consider Herman Miller chairs. If you have an opportunity to make it to an office furnishings store, you can sit in them and try them out for an extended period, then configure and mail-order one from an on-line discounter when home.
The best office chair I ever had was a Herman Miller Aeon chair. One of the reasons I stayed with that company as long as I did.
This chair has adjustable arm rests to accommodate you desk. Most adjustments of any chair I looked at. Once I chose the chair I wanted I looked around for price and found the best price at Amazon. Serta Ergo-executive Office Chair, Bonded Leather, Black, 43676 by Serta
I have no idea who the manufacturer was, but about 13 years ago, I was doing some repair work at a municipal fire/police call center. The operators there worked 12 hour shifts, and they had the most WONDERFULLY comfortable chairs. I do remember asking how expensive they were, and they said “very!”
They were also VERY well constructed, and the chairs there had been in use for at lest 4 years at the time.
Iit was the most comfortable chair I’ve ever sat in. You might contact your local police or fire station (on their non-emergency line!) to see if you can get any information.

PS - How’s the cheese dip?
Bad Joe?
You lost me...
LOL, Perfect solution to any seating problem. :D
The cheese dip is awesome! Did i err?
Lol...I appreciate the advice, however thats not really my issue. I spend all day on my feet walking around hospital then need to do charting and paperwork from home office. I just need a chair thats fits me and makes me sit with proper form and ergonomics. Many of the office depot/staples, etc chairs are too short from the base of the chair (my hips) to the end of the seat ( middle of my hamstrings) this inhibits lower leg circulation and can lead to an entire host of ailments that i’d rather avoid.
