*Vanity* Advice needed-Looking for a good office chair

Hello Freepers, I am looking to buy a new office chair and was looking for recommendations/suggestions, and endorsements. Advice about chairs to avoid is welcome too. I don't have any odd requirements to speak of. I just want a chair that swivels, rocks and has some height adjustment. I am about 6'3", and weigh 207 lbs so I'd probably want a "big/tall" version.Obviously I want comfort and good ergonomics. I posted this in the "computer" topic because I figured those of you computer guys/gals that spend copious amounts of time in front of a machine would have unique knowledge. Also, suggestions on good sources for purchase welcome too as out here in the woods the only options are Office Depot, and other chain stores. I'd like to keep the budget around $500 or less.
Thanks in advance for your help

I’ve been looking at this one. I think I’ll buy it when I retire the one I have now.

I like the Tempurpedic line from Staples. I picked one up for just under $200 on a the black Friday sale. It is listed at $299. I haven't had it long enough to tell how durable it is.

I got some really comfy high backs from Office Depot several years ago. For like $55.00 or so. Look online.

Office chairs.com has a big and tall section. If you have a $500 budget I would check out the executive chairs.

A couple of the links above I don’t recommend, because they have fixed armrests and backs. I got one of those for my home office, and I regret it. You want one with adjustable seat height, back height, and arm rests at minimum. Here are the adustments:
1. Set the seat height so that, when you stand in front of the chair facing toward it, the top of the seat comes just under your knee cap.
2. Sit in the chair, and adjust the seat back until it is putting support right in the small of your back.
3. Still sitting, adjust the arm rests so that, when your arms rest normally at your sides, they just barely touch the armrests. (Or don’t have arm rests at all, there are two schools of thought on this one.)

A very, very good chair is the Aeon chair, which retails for about $520; like an above poster said, look for one on Craig's list or eBay. They have been around long enough now, and enough businesses have gone under, that you should be able to find one for less. Balanced against medical bills for back pain, even the retail price is not such a bad deal.

To stay on the safe side, go to various office furniture stores and try out various chairs before buying. Stay in the various models for 10-12 minutes with a laptop. The store will understand.

Go to Big Lots and buy the cheapest one there.
You will not be able to stand it for more than an hour or so, but it will help get you off you a$$ and may help keep you from getting fat and out of shape from sitting all day.
This ain't sarcasm, but the voice of experience.

See if they still make a Steelcase 45412M. I bought my 1986 seat for $60.00 second-hand from an office supply store fifteen years ago. The sales woman claimed it’s list price was $600.00. I took it apart to clean dust and carpet strings from the heavy-duty wheels and siliconed-lubed them. My now twenty-year old son commandeered it soon after destroying his $14.00 Ikea chair and treated it like the caged gorilla in the Samsonite suitcase commercial. The only wear shown is the worn through fabric wheel he rests his right boot while playing video games. It’s simply strong, comfortable, and outstanding like no other.

The Herman Miler Equa 2 hands down best office chair. Discovered it after having back surgery and am now on my 2nd one in 25 years. The seat and back flex with you and support you. Its not cheap, but spread the cost over ten or more years and its quite reasonable. Forget the Aeron, poor support

Head to the local staples, find one that suits your body shape.
Expect it to be somewhat pricey.
