* In a measure to reduce the amount of paper consumed for the daily newspaper, Times management has decided that, beginning today, the font size used for the communiques shall be reduced to the point where individual letters are invisible to the naked eye. To prevent dangerous eye strain from afflicting twenty-first century readers I will reduce the size of the communique pages I scan. This will result in enlarged images uploaded to photobucket and subsequently posted for your reading pleasure – HJS.

Tuesday, March 21, 1944 www.onwar.com

In Burma... The British 20th Indian Division completes its withdrawal. The division now holds a line on the Shenan Hills and between Palel and Wangjing. The 17th Indian Division continues fighting through the roadblocks, held by the Japanese 33rd Division, in its effort to pull back.

In New Guinea... US forces moving west from Yalau Plantation link up with Australian forces advancing north, from inland, on the Huon Peninsula.

March 21, 1944:

"By March 1943 almost all of the Jews living in the Generalgouvernement had been killed.
Thus, Heinrich Himmler decided to wind down Operation Reinhard (the extermination of Jews in the area), which officially ended on October 19, 1943.
In August the last 25,000 Jews living in the Bialystok Ghetto were transported to Treblinka, where they were murdered.
The Nazis closed the camp in the fall, then razed it in order to cover up their crimes.
When the Soviets arrived in the region in July 1944, they discovered that a Ukrainian peasant family had moved into a house (pictured) that had been built on the camp's grounds by the SS.
The Red Army forced the Ukrainians to move and then burned the house."

Early reports of the capture of Cassino town seem to have been exaggerated.

I’ll have to read the Lonergan trial news later, when various Offspring are done using the computer.

In the future-past, note that General Wingate will die in a plane crash in Burma shortly. His sister had predicted his death and written a poem about it in advance; whole family was rather strange, similar to the Pattons in some ways.

Yes, best to read about the Lonergan trial without kiddos around. :-))
