What if Putin said he just wanted "this island" of Alaska's, or "that small region"?
He might say Peter the Great did not represent the will of the Russian people when he sold the land to William Seward on behalf of the United States....
What would the nation do? What would the regime do? What would you do?
It’s funny, I was thinking about the very same thing yesterday. My wife and I are active duty military. I am retiring 1 September of this year, but my wife has 7 more years to go. She just got orders for Elmendorf AFB yesterday. We’re excited, and I’ve been there TDY so I know how beautiful Anchorage is. Anyways, I was thinking what the regime would do if Putin declared Alaska was to be returned to Russia.
Secretary Kerry would insist that they refund the money paid for “Seward’s Folly”. ($7.2 Million, or 2 cents per acre)
But why? Eastern Siberia may hold gigantic mineral riches and huge reserves of petroleum and natural gas, so they don’t need Alaska.

There are very few Russians in Alaska, and none are being mistreated.
Alaskan oil goes to Putin approved recipients, and Putin doesn't need more oil.
Alaska has no more military or transportation value that existing Russian territory across the strait.
Alaska was a legitimate purchase, not a contested military spoil, and Russia was paid in full.
I don't recall any Russian-Alaskan disputes at all much less ones that could be blown up.

No, Chicago goes to the Polish, Lithuanians, and others. Highland Park is where you find a sizable community of Russians/Russian-Americans. Also communities in New York, Maryland, North Dakota, South Dakota, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington, and California have populations of Russian/Russian-Americans greater than 10 percent. West Hollywood, California is one of those communities.
