Jimmy Carter believes U.S. is spying on him

Former President Jimmy Carter believes U.S. intelligence agencies are spying on him — so much so, he eschews email to avoid government spies.

"You know, I have felt that my own communications are probably monitored," Carter told NBC's Andrea Mitchell in an interview broadcast Sunday. "And when I want to communicate with a foreign leader privately, I type or write a letter myself, put it in the post office and mail it.

"I believe if I send an email, it will be monitored," Carter continued.

The 89-year-old said the National Security Agency and others have abused the argument that gathering intelligence is critical to homeland security.

"That has been extremely liberalized and, I think, abused by our own intelligence agencies," Carter said.

It can very difficult to distinguish among various levels of delusion. Carter is more of a reference than an example.

Democrats are trying to distance themselves from the NSA before the elections. Feinstein did it last week, now Carter. It’s strategery. They couldn’t care less about privacy. This is about an election.

Jimmy,

You have a long history as a terrorist sympathizer so, in your case, I believe it’s justified. They should spy on you.

When an agency is into spying, everything is game. One never knows what information an ex-president may have. Whether one liked President Carter, he has a right to privacy. Period.

So apparently President Carter thinks the government is incapable of intercepting a typed or hand written letter that is handed to the Postal Service for delivery. He hasn’t gotten any smarter, has he?

Each and every postal item is photographed, and tracked to a degree. This alone could yield interesting metadata.

Government tends by its very nature to attract people who want to govern -- run other people's lives, in other words. It should be an urgent priority to discourage that sort of people from government service. They are supposed to be there to serve, after all, not rule.
