Thirdhand Smoke Is Real—And Risky to Your Health
National Geographic ^ | 03/20/2014 | Susan Brink

Posted on 03/25/2014 7:44:23 AM PDT by Rusty0604

Researchers now know that residual tobacco smoke, dubbed thirdhand smoke, combines with indoor pollutants such as ozone and nitrous acid to create new compounds. Thirdhand smoke mixes and settles with dust, drifts down to carpeting and furniture surfaces, and makes its way deep into the porous material in paneling and drywall.

Hotel workers who sweep, vacuum, change linens, and dust the rooms of smokers are exposed to higher doses of thirdhand smoke than are the guests who stay a few nights in smoking rooms

Those who move into houses or apartments formerly owned by smokers might be exposed as well. And thirdhand smoke is difficult to eliminate

Ha...friend of ours knew a smoking heart surgeon...asked him why he smoked...His response...”you wouldn’t want me doing heart surgery on you if I didn’t. “

There’s evidence that it’s dangerous to my cat?

You’re assuming stopping will occur. The left’s pursuit of “victims” and hand wringing over “injustices” will never stop, it’s who they are and all they are.

And yet the putative negative effects of second hand smoke have been completely debunked:

The smokers don’t want to hear that, let’s see if they answer you.

Yep. It’s all about PPM. And the ppm in a single puff inhaled from a cigarrette is staggering compared to what you get in a smoke filled bar.

And here’s the thing: All of your ograns that are used to clean the air, liquid and food you ingest are like a big HVAC system. As long as you use it within its design parameters you are golden. You are only in trouble when you overtax it (e.g. smoking or drunken stupor) or ingest chemicals that it is not designed to handle (e.g. antifreeze or cyanide).

FWIW, I say this as someone who hates cigarrette smoke.

Yes.

The only studies that I ever saw that could qualify and quantify damage done via second hand smoke ALL involved cats.

Keep in mind that I have not read every single study out there, though.

And I'm still waiting to hear how tobacco smoke is so bad but pot smoke isn't.

For the same reason that pot is bad but alcohol isn't. Nanny staters think their own poisons are fine but everything else should be criminalized.

I’m much more concerned about 5th-hand smoke, whereinwhich any tobacco plant exists anywhere in the universe.

BAN 5TH-HAND SMOKE NOW!

Maybe it isn't the smoke so much as the chemicals in the fabrics, degenerating cushioning materials, the wood, vinyl, etc. Maybe the smoke even mitigates the effects of all that other stuff...

Like third-hand perfume, or hand lotion or any of a host of other substances...

Second hand smoke hysteria is clearly artificial and was ginned up as a way to justify health nazis pushing people whose habits they find offensive around.

Their thirst for power is insatiable and they will look for any pretext to exercise it.

I am a part-time closet smoker now myself, just being honest. I don’t think walking past someone smoking a cigarette is going to hurt you. I don’t even think being in a smoking bar for a few hours will do anything to you, but I definitely think being a non smoker living full-time in a house full of smokers has an effect over time. I step outside for my cigs.

If there's anything risky to health, it's this crap sandwich of an article. It's full of weasel words like "might" and "may" and quotes from various "expert" grant junkies.

If this thing is representative of the quality of articles now appearing in National Geographic, I imagine they must have also replaced their once quality photography with primitive stick figures and childishly drawn wavy drawings of mountains and such.

But considering who's been twice elected President, the moronic public will soon obediently be screeching that "the science is settled!" and calling for laws to be passed to charge all smokers, past and present, with attempted murder.

The stupid is everywhere.

Seems to me a recent study said that second hand smoke was not harmful despite years of our government saying it was. Frankly, if second hand or third hand smoke was so bad, I should be dead. During my college years I worked part time in a pool hall to get spending money. There were days the smoke haze was so dense it hung around the top of the tables. The situation finally got so bad even the smokers complained and the owner was forced to put in an exhaust fan. I still remember the smell on my clothes and my tongue feeling like I licked an ash tray when I went home.

I haven't been in a hotel that allows smoking in years.

But marijuana smoke, 1st, 2nd or 3rd hand is good. Or so we are to take as the gospel from the pro-marijuana/anti-tobacco folks.

Who knows really? I come from a family of smokers as well, and all 6 of us kids had NO health issues related to smoke.

I’m laughing that these morons just know how to play all the freakin idiots they’ve groomed.

As a side note; my little sister was a track champion in HS, even with all that deadly smoke swirling around our home. My brother was a state champ gymnast with all that smoke hanging around the house!

This isn’t pointed at you wolf, just my general comments to share.

Almost ever time I respond to a smoking thread I am sorry that I did (not you). They are convinced that it is all about control. The only thing I want to control is the air I breathe into my lungs. I will avoid smokers ever chance I get, not control them, AVOID them.
