We Just Learned CEO Satya Nadella's Master Plan For Microsoft
Business Insider ^ | 03/27/2014 | Steve Kovach

The big news from Microsoft today was that it has finally launched Office for iPad, which will give users full access to the popular productivity suite if they sign up for the Office 365 subscription service. But under the surface of the announcement, we got our first look at CEO Satya Nadella's broader vision for Microsoft's future. Nadella has only been CEO for 52 days, but we're already getting a sense of how he plans to expand the company's offerings beyond its core products like Windows.

In short, Nadella sees Microsoft powering all sorts of devices through services and apps like Office. It doesn't matter if the device runs Windows or a competing platform like Android or iOS. Microsoft wants to be powering what you do on every gizmo.

"We think about users both as individuals and organizations spanning across all devices," Nadella said during today's launch event.

He went on to mention the growing trends at big companies. Many people prefer to use their personal devices for work, and a lot of those aren't powered by Windows.

It's a slight shift from the narrative Microsoft has been pushing since 2012, when the company decided to transition to one that makes devices and software, not just software. But a lot of that software was focused on Windows. Now we're going to see Microsoft branch out, even if that means running its software on devices and operating systems built by its biggest competitors like Apple and Google.

Looks like he’s on the right track.

Don’t like subscriptions to Office? There are non-MS freebies online (mentioned above by others), and the wholesale clubs sell other office software bundles for as little as $20 (has a PDF editor, which is why I wanted to try it) and Word Perfect, and the related spreadsheet I can’t remember the name, and some other stuff, is about $60.

Office hasn’t been under $200 in many many years, unless there was some short promos or something.

I d/led Open Office because I’d used that from time to time and liked it (it looks a lot more professional now). I had to use it today here at home because there’s nothin’ in the W8.1 installation.

Going back to WFW and pre-95 Windows there used to be a lower end basic office package “Works” that MS used to include for the OEMs. That’s been gone a while already.

Online ‘cloud’ apps are also available, and (allegedly) secure and available where you happen to be. Besides Google apps, there’s Zoho, and probably others:

VMS and its later version, OpenVMS was the best, most stable, reliable and most secure operating system I’ve worked with the past 20 years.

Too bad, it never achieved popularity other than in mission critical applications.

>>Are we going to see .NET for, Linux, UNIX, iOS and Android?

That’s implied in the article, isn’t it? Color me skeptical.

I think it's a great deal. For $99 a year, I get Microsoft Office on four devices (up to 5 if I need it). That's $20-25 a year per device to run the latest and greatest version of Office. Back in the 1990s, I paid something like $700 for a single-user copy of Office and it was out of date two years later.

Does anybody remember Microsoft Cinemania? Now that was a rip-off. I think I used it maybe 4 times. Now it's shelfware because the IMDB website has 1000x the information that Cinemania had. And it's free and up to date.

I found for my sister a few years ago, i think it a free MS office limited functionality release with Advertising. She says it does the job.

As my wife qualifies for educational pricing, $80 for 4 years on 2 devices is tolerable.

IIRC, OpenOffice can export files in PowerPoint format from their OO equivalent to PP. (I know that OO Writer can export in Word format and that OO Calc can export .xls format files.) You may not be as “stuck” with Office as you think you are.

I certainly hope not, I enjoy not seeing the blue screen of death on those devices. and have no desire to see MS’s java clone ported to other environments. I don’t need to see any more Visual Basic as long as I live.

No, too much of the formatting was messed up . Microsoft knows how to protect its franchise.
