Your post does help, I just talked to my husband and someone from the dealership told him I must have driven over something that cut the tread all the way across. I promise you I saw nothing in the road. All I know is I was driving about 30 mph and I heard a loud “pop”, ten seconds later my “Low Tire Pressure” light came on. When I got out to look I saw my back passenger tire going flat. My husband has asked for the tire but they are stonewalling on giving it to him. BTW, it’s a Ford Dealership, not a tire one.

Check the date code on your new tires to make sure they didn’t sell you old tires.

Happened to me once a few years ago. I purchased what I thought were new tires and while the tires had never been used - they had languished in the dealer’s inventory for 10 years. I raised a stink and they did replace them with current inventory.

You are right, I do not know anything about dealerships and I do not work for one. BUT I do know tires. I also know that no retailer in his right mind doesn’t want to make a factory defect right. I also know that EVERY tire company will reimburse the dealer or retailer for defective tires. I also know that defective tires are much fewer today than they were just a few years ago, but they still happen and that is why tires are warranted.

Now since you seem to be the expert on dealers, Why would they not warrant a tire that is defective? Is it because they like adverse publicity? Or do they just enjoy screwing over their customers so they will go to the competition to buy their next set of tires?

“Firestone 500’s back in the early 80’s........................Tread separations and Sidewall blowouts.....”

One of the people who worked for me was a very knowledgeable car person. He was ahead of the curve on the Firestone 500 fiasco.

One day he asked me to come over to his vehicle, kneel down next to a tire and close my eyes and run my hand along a designated place on the tire. Then he asked me to describe what I felt. I told him it felt like BBs under the tire surface. He told me the 500 tires were defective and Firestone wouldn't make good on them.

He went back to Firestone had the 500s replaced with another tire.

When the bill came, he refused to pay it, and told Firestone to take him to court because he could show the 500s were defective.
Eventually the 500s got recalled. - Tom

The only front tire flat I ever had was on my 1954 chevy station wagon. It went pst, pst, pst, pst, pst and I pulled over to watch it slowly go flat. I had worn through all layers of chords and it just wore a hole in the tire.

I was young and poor.

We owned an Explorer with the bad Firestone ties when we lived in Minnesota. When we got the final demand to come in for new free tires, the dealer, and every Firestone dealer in the Twin Cities, was out of stock.
Firestone paid for a new set of Michelins.

Those are catastrophic failures, not a flat tire.

Miss Edie, Find a tire dealer you can trust. I have used the same shop, Flynn Tire, 30+ years. Maybe I pay a little more there, but I trust them(Kelly and Goodyear tires plus other brands.) Forget about that Ford dealer and move on.

“So far I think Discount has the best warranty.”

And in Colorado, Discount Tire has the most helpful, knowledgeable and friendly people of any of the tire shops. Costco tire shops around here suck as they’ll do almost anything to avoid honoring their road hazard warranty. At least that was my experience with Costco.

Mine too. I’ve bought my last Costco tires. I always loved Discount Tire.

My husband has asked for the tire but they are stonewalling on giving it to him.

That part right there seems suspicious to me. There's no reason they wouldn't return the tire (and most places will charge you a $5-10 tire disposal fee when you get new ones, unless you take the old ones with you), but then I don't see why a dealership would give you such a hassle over this. And something that cut the tread all the way across should have been pretty noticeable to you, and likely shouldn't have caused a popping noise.

My suggestion, is next time go to Discount Tire (America's Tire), they've always been good for me. Plus they'll fix your flat free whether you bought their tires or not. Hazard warranty is great, if you get a flat due to sidewall damage, you essentially get a free tire replacement. I've actually had 3 tires replaced that way, from construction debris/nails.

That sucks:

You have a (alleged) dishonest Ford Dealership Service Dept.

I recommend Ford Corporate Customer Service Directly:

http://corporate.ford.com/owner-services/customer-support/contact-ford

If I’m correct, they may be violating at a minimum Ford’s own policies on that, plus possibly a State law or 2, depending on your State, by not providing you the tire to justify the ‘repair’ or ‘replacement’. ‘Stonewalling’ is a big red flag, obviously. Road debris happens; sometimes we see it, usually we don’t.

Good luck.

I try to buy Michelin Tires or not Union shop tires. The Union tire shops seem to have more failures.
