Newt Gingrich's Plan to Stave Off the Apocalypse
National Journal ^ | March 28, 2014 | Alex Brown

Posted on 03/28/2014 11:49:45 AM PDT by Svartalfiar

Within a year, nine out of 10 Americans could be dead. And whatever causes the national apocalypse—be it North Korean malice or the whims of the sun—the downfall will ultimately be our own fault.

That's the fear of Newt Gingrich and other members of a high-profile coalition who are convinced that our fragile electrical grid could be wiped out at any moment.

Their concern? Electromagnetic pulses, the short bursts of energy—caused by anything from a nuclear blast to a solar flare—that can wreak havoc on electrical systems on a massive scale. And the coalition believes it's coming soon.

Newt has been on this for years. He wrote a forward section for Forsten’s book- One Second After.

This isn’t really new news in a way.

Newt's a Christian who appears to be calculating in his own self effort here without godly counsel IMO. Highly unlikely that the tribulation will begin within the year. I could, but not likely IMO. I think there's still a harvest yet to be had before it all comes crashing down. And if that were true, Christians would be jettisoned out of here anyway before it all came down.

Occasionally, a politician is correct about science.

This is one of those very very very rare occasions.

If Newt Gingrich thinks EMP is a major problem, he needs better advisors.
Generating a large EMP takes a +1MT warhead detonated 100 miles over its target.

First you need a +1MT warhead. Only 4, maybe 5 countries have the technology for 2 stage thermonuclear warheads.

Then you need a launch platform to place a 5000lb warhead 100 miles above the target. Same 4 countries.

After all that, you take out the power grid of something the size of Wisconsin...and the rest of the 49 states are really pissed off.
and know Exactly who launched the missile.

Newt Gingrich and other members of a high-profile coalition ...

So 20 years ago he sold out our sovereignty with NAFTA/GATT/WTO and today we're supposed to believe he's trying to save us an EMP attack. Did he meet these new buddies at a Council on Foreign Relations luncheon?

Seems to me that Nuclear plants need to be designed to handle a shutdown in the event of an EMP attack. They have backup generators and cooling systems. Wouldn’t this be as simple as making sure the backup generators and cooling pumps are protected by a Ferriday grid?

As far as the effects on the rest of the country, I think every city of 50,000 or more (715 cities) should prepare an emergency power supply location with electrical hookups to their grid. This site could accept one of the concrete encased mini-nuke plants being dropped into place. The idea being that power could be restored very quickly to large segments of the population.

And then vulnerable points in the grid simply need to be hardened against attack.

The mini-nuke plants cost $1 billion to $2 billion a piece. But we probably wouldn’t need 715 of them. We probably just need 200 hundred, and the industrial capacity to quickly make more.

Wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing as long as we made sure to evening up the playing field by EMP’ing everyone else so we are no the only ones in the dark and vulnerable to invasion while we rebuild. Sadly our CiC doesn’t have the stones to do it.

Maybe one other thought ... Since the substations would remain above ground a breaker could be set to trip once the surge came in thereby saving the underground lines.

It would be much easier and cheaper to detonate a van full of Cobalt 60 in NYC financial district.
Only big problem would be getting it into the city.

You are correct about HEMP - high altitude electromagnetic pulse. It generates the three most damaging forms of nuclear-originated EMP.

But SCUD-like platforms can deliver a SREMP -source regional EMP which can disable a metro region like ny to boston. They are essentially direct effect weapons that dont produce the E1 pulse inherent in an exoatmospheric blast that excites the atmosphere and kills a national area line of sight.

Going from memory, but there have been some articles about creating a “poor man’s emp weapon” that isn’t a nuke. Will have to look for them later.

There was also a recent thread here about how taking down a small portion of the grid in an initial attack could have a massive cascading impact and take down most, or at least a lot, of the rest of it. Even medium sized disruption that spans into weeks or months will cause an absolute nightmare.

Nine out of ten Americans being killed would be about 280 million deaths from a catastrophic event and would almost certainly trigger a nuclear retaliation causing hundreds of millions more deaths. That is a Tribulation/Apocalyptic scenario.

Very true.
My point was that to try and generate a EMP means you need both the warhead and lifting body strong enough to stay out of the blast zone.
Any country other than USA, Russia, UK, France doesn’t have the range to reach us.

Now a shipping container in San Francisco bay would be much easier and cheaper.

Quite Correct! In the history of man he has repeatedly shown his ability to cause such havoc that people have cried out to the Lord to bring his own end to relieve their suffering.

There have been plenty of mass exterminations of people without it being the end of times. The black death killed half the population of Europe, and people thought it was the end, but it wasn’t.

God helps those who help themselves.

Well, obviously I was addressing the nuclear scenario, but it's the same result.

The sun is used explicitly in the Bible and specifically in Revelation as one of the punishments and plagues during the Tribulation. Who knows how many hundreds of million deaths around the world would be added to the 280 million deaths in this country? If that's not a Tribulation/Apocalyptic scenario I don't know what is.

Forget EMP. Its a lot easier to just take down the grid by demolishng enough substations. If you do not have an alternative power system you need to get working on it becausse we will at some point be in the dark for 18 mos to 4 years.

Burying the lines does not help. These are geomagnetic currents. A few feet of dirt is "skin deep" to currents that low in frequency.

Google "Russian EMP" and find out what happened to their power plant after a nuclear test.

The sun has been doing this kind of stuff for a very long time. The trouble is ... that we haven’t had some of the more serious “hits” from the sun, as we’ve had in the past in North America and when people lived here in historical times. Back then when it happened, it was a non-event, except for the glowing lights in the sky. Now, it’s the infrastructure of society that is in danger and it’s “that collapse” which would be the problem.

It’s happened before, but we didn’t have today’s infrastructure.

I read 1945 (Riverdale, NY: Baen, 1995) and was very disappointed. It's an action/adventure story whose "to be continued" ending leaves the reader hanging--but no sequel ever came out.

The Son does not know the EXACT DAY OR HOUR and that's not what I'm talking about. I said IMO I didn't think that day was upon us yet and either way, there's no need to panic for the reasons I gave. (God has given us understanding about the "times and the seasons" and exhorts us to be "children of light" not going around as though we didn't know what was going on.)

These contemplated scenarios could easily lead to 1 billion deaths or more from a catastrophic event. Something at that scale hasn't happened since the Flood. But that scale is explicitly laid out in the Book of Revelation near the beginning of the tribulation. One of the first shots over the bow in the tribulation will be the deaths of 1.75 billion people (at today's population) (Rev 6:8) not too long after that, another 1.75 billion people gone (Rev 9:15).

That's not what the EMP Commission says:

http://empcommission.org/

"What is significant about an EMP attack is that one or a few high-altitude nuclear detonations can produce EMP effects that can potentially disrupt or damage electronic and electrical systems over much of the United States, virtually simultaneously, at a time determined by an adversary."

Not nearly at the scale contemplated here - around 1 billion deaths if you add up the whole world from a catastrophic event. That is an apocalyptic/tribulation event.

A lot of things have been going on for a long time including meteor showers. The issue here is how many deaths are contemplated from the event regardless of its effect in the past. When you start talking about 1 billion + deaths from the event, you’re talking apocalyptic/tribulation stuff.

Yeah, the alt WWII stuff is increasingly leaving me flat. I don’t even bother to page through the new Turtledove stuff anymore.

The Birmingham “Axis of Time” trilogy started ok, had a great second book (allegedly heavily edited by Eric Flint of the 1632 series) and then sputtered to death in book 3. His first two “After America” books were pretty good, but the third really sucked. Guy just doesn’t know how to lay out a multibook series in a way that’s consistent and brings it to an effective/coherent conclusion.
