I don’t get Bosley Crowther’s “tired business man” reference, but I can’t argue with his comment that ‘Cover Girl’ “is so handicapped with clichés that it looks like an obstacle course.” Crowther believes Rita Hayworth dances better with Gene Kelly that any other partner she has had to date. I didn’t find those numbers – songs or dancing – particularly memorable. Perhaps in 1944 Gene Kelly was pushing Fred Astaire for “top rung” on the Hollywood dancing hierarchy, but in my opinion Kelly never achieved a place in history as exalted as that of the immortal Fred. Those of us of a certain age will remember cast members Phil Silvers and Eve Arden from our television heritage. Two stars for a humdrum “Cover Girl” – HJS.

Netflix has “Cover Girl” on DVD.

After “Moscow Strikes Back” and “Heroic Stalingrad” Russia gives you a sensational new film document: UKRAINE in FLAMES

(You can’t make this stuff up.)

“Her Primitive Man” was a pretty wacky comedy, as I recall. Not many film buffs are probably too familiar with it, as it hasn’t really circulated in years. An old Universal item, outside the scope of the TCM library, and probably has never even been re-mastered. Louise Albritton was also in another good Universal comedy of similar vintage, entitled “San Diego, I Love You.”

Interesting! I sort of read Italian, so I could follow the text in the first segment. What a fine place Ukraine was before the Nazi canaille attacked, how flourishing the collective farms! Almost as if 10 million people hadn't died in the famine just a few years earlier ...

Rita wasn't much of a dancer, but she sure was a looker.

Fred Astaire thought she was OK.
