Twice a week I carried my rifle through the school... because the range was in the basement.

"We've read on this website about the 18 year old boy who was expelled from school and sent to jail from an illegal search in his car where they found a knife in the trunk. When I was in elementary and jr. high school the boys would always carry a jack knife or fishing knife in our pockets, I still have my old fishing knife from elementary school that dad gave me for Christmas. The most sought after knife was the Swiss Army Knife. We always played cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians with our cap guns in the school yard. At home we had a Daisy bb gun to play with. When I was in high school dad gave me a single barreled shotgun that I used to shoot magpise and jack rabbits with. If I was a kid today I would be sent to prison as a felon and they would throw away the keys.<"

Me too, but after June 12, 2018, when Maine votes to be a free and independent country, the Constitution will include the following, look carefully at the ages and think:

Section 5. Unreasonable searches prohibited. The people shall be secure in their persons, houses, papers and possessions from all unreasonable searches and seizures; and no warrant to search any place, or seize any person or thing, shall issue without a special designation of the place to be searched, and the person or thing to be seized, nor without probable cause -- supported by oath or affirmation.

Section 6. The Militia and the standing army of 1,000. So as to insure and guarantee the rights guaranteed in this Constitution, every natural born male in the Republic of Maine, upon reaching the age of 18 years from conception through age 67 years from conception, has, as a member of the Militia, the obligation to keep and bear arms for the common defense, for his and his families protection, to defend against this government or any government in the future from becoming oppressive, tyrannical, or in any other way obnoxious to freedom, and to secure the rights written in this Constitution. This obligation shall never be questioned. No law shall be passed that restricts this obligation, except for time in a local jail, county jail or Maine Republic prison. No law shall be passed, test given, or fee assessed to any citizen of the Republic of Maine, age 18 from the age of conception, both male and female, that would restrict in any way that citizens right to be armed either concealed or open. Males who are found to be or confess to being homosexuals are refused entry and from serving in either the Militia or the standing army. Males over the age of 67 may be voluntary members of the Militia with the full rights of Militia members. Natural born males between the age of 16 years from conception to 18 years from conception may volunteer for Militia service with the written permission of parents or guardians. The standing army of 1,000 shall be drawn from the Militia by the commander of the Militia and is under the command of the commander of the Militia who is appointed by and reports directly to the President.

Yup. In high school in Albuquerque, back in the day (’65ish), there were always a few pick up trucks with rifles in the racks in the student parking lot. Never had a problem. Nobody complained. (fear of being shot!!!???)

One of my teachers in high school borrowed my Swiss Army Knife during class once. No one was worried that I was going to go crazy and start stabbing people, apparently. Maybe that’s because the school wasn’t pumping all the kids full if Ritalin. I used to walk through the neighborhood with my authentic-looking BB rifle. No one freaked out. I didn’t go crazy and start shooting people’s dogs.

Same for me, since I was a little kid until now. A few I don't remember all that well from when I was in early grade school, but I do remember the picture of me being a sentry on the front porch in my Daniel Boone coat and coonskin hat, holding a flintlock, like on my favorite TV show then.

And I remember that massive multi-tool pocket knife that even had a knife, fork and spoon I "won" for selling magazine subscriptions, which I then got in trouble for losing a short time later (3rd or 4th grade).

When I was in fifth or sixth grade, my brother in law gave me the knife the USN gave him when he came home from Vietnam. And I remember the Buck Folding Hunter I carried in Jr. High I bought with money I earned from my paper routes.

In high school I got a very cool Swiss Army knife I carried on a watch chain. It was also fairly common during pheasant season at that time and place to see shotguns in the back windows of pickup trucks in the high school parking lot (mid to late 1970s). Most were farm kids and would hunt the ditches and fence rows on their way home from school.

Amazing how quickly things have changed for the worst since the 1960s and 70s. My pet theory is that it has a lot to do with the evil that bloomed here when Roe v Wade was passed. Satan loves the sacrificed blood of infants, the most innocent souls of us all.
