I used to get bus tickets when I lived in Seattle because I had an adopted bus stop. Usually I needed them for myself, but once I gave one to a guy who was begging for bus fare. He was kind of rude and didnt say thank you. After that I only gave out tickets to people who had boarded and were struggling to pay fare, or in one case, a guy who was looking through the trash for a transfer. These people were polite and grateful.

I always gave to “the unfortunate.” Food banks, benefits, “giving trees” at Christmas, the Salvation Army kettle, even the guy with the sign at the stoplight - you name it. After Election Day 2012, I guess you could say I’m one of those whose “heart has hardened.” What I believe now is that most of us are, and have been, suckers for working and contributing to people who do everything they can to TAKE TAKE TAKE TAKE TAKE. What I believe is that the vast majority will just keep TAKING and never changing their bad decisions - or their voting - because they think they DESERVE to TAKE. What I believe now is screw ‘em, I’m worrying about my own family. That’s what my kids will learn as well. Sorry if that offends, but that’s what it has come to. I will not support those who think it’s the government’s job to TAKE from us anyway. Let them hold out their hands to Uncle B. Hussein.
After skimming through the story, my impression is it is more for show/publicity/see-how-good-I-am than the ostensible expression of sincere gratitude.
For one thing, it refers repeatedly to the “women behind me”. If she was truly thankful to the woman at all, she should have at least asked for her name and number so she could pay her back. Apparently she did none of that but she made sure to post online gushing about her gratitude.
If she didn’t see the need or obligation to pay the woman back, why would anyone think she will “pay it forward”, which usually refers to cases when it is impractical or impossible to thank the benefactor directly?
And because of all that I only give to specific charities now. And there are so many scammers out there that I NEVER give to individuals. Apparently the woman was already getting food stamps.....so this guy paid for her groceries twice. Not gonna say sorry and apologize for saying it. It is what it is.

I have a cousin that works every day but is money stupid. She doesn’t make alot of money but could live on it if she was smart. She’s not. She never has 2 nickels to rub together. Anyway I invited her to go to our boat with me for the weekend. Wouldn’t cost her a dime. I filled up the gas tank, $60, and off we went. First stop when we got there was at the grocery store to buy food for the weekend. I was buying stuff for sandwiches and reached for the Bar S bologna because it was cheapest. From behind me I hear....I only eat Oscar Meyer bologna. I turned around and said....seriously?.......then I guess you won’t be eating.
Long story but I learned a nice lesson.

As my Late Mother always said, “you help people who can’t help themselves, not people who won’t help themselves”.
The “won’t” help themselves crowd steals from the “can’t” help themselves crowd. If that wasn’t the case, the Safety Net wouldn’t be the Hammock it has become today.
She also said, “there will always be someone better off than you and there will always be someone worse off that you, that’s Life”.
If anyone hasn’t noticed, Liberals prefer that all of us are worse off. It makes a difference when people Vote for a Living instead of Work for a Living. We all know who gets their Vote, now don’t we?
Now, what is the point of this Thread, all us Conservative types are big meanies? It just shows me that Charity works.
Some of us have the capability to see the deadbeats for who they are vs. those truly in need through no fault of their own.
If that makes me part of the "deadbeats" crowd or "hard hearted" I'll wear that badge proudly. I'm at least smart enough to know how to tell the difference between the two.
Some cities have decided that giving to panhandlers is bad for their cities and I guess that the city if Berkley was one and did an ad campaign kind if like the anti-drug ads where people take responsibility for the far-reaching effects of their behavior. The gist was dont give because you think it’s the right thing to do, because it isn’t. Give to XYZ charity instead. The city of Everett is going to install “giving meters”, which are like parking meters only for voluntary donations to charities. I don’t know if they know that giving meters were a failure in Seattle—people just didnt give. Homeless actuvists( generally pain in the ass types who don’t really care about the poor) vociferously opposed the meters, of course.
Everett has a big homeless problem piled onto an even bigger heroin and meth problem. We found out part of the problem was that SnoCo was being very enterprising—renting out jail space to places like Redmond ( in King Co., yet)to transport up here. Trouble is, Redmond didnt transport them back when they were released, so they were knocking around downtown Everett. A cording to one news account, they didnt provide in any way for transportation back to their hometowns. Everett PD says they do(I asked.)—I’m guessing its probably in the form of bus tickets that get sold, stolen, lost, etc.
Most of the people in Redmond and Issaquah would wet their pants if they had to deal with the urban problems that we do. I guess some of them don’t even have jails. It pays to read these little free weekly newspapers sometimes

An attitude of gratitude can mean the difference between life and death.
There was a man in my life I remember very clearly. It was 50 years ago and I was 12 but this man saw my family and our need and gave generously without judgement. He was the milkman. His name was Mr. Moss and every week he brought his delivery truck to our alley and gave us all his outdated milk, butter, ice cream and like that.
We ate like kings. We were 12 kids and a mom with no money. We loved him. And we still do. Everyone of us remembers his kindness.
