SAN DIEGO (KGO) -- There is now an estimate on how much it cost to rescue a San Diego family with a sick child off the coast of Mexico. A San Diego newspaper crunched the numbers and says the price for the joint effort between the Coast Guard, Navy and National Guard came to $663,000 and could go higher. The family arrived back on shore Wednesday. The parents have taken some heat for taking their children on a yearlong sailing trip.

Well you could get eaten by a giant squid.

. . . and some days, the calamari eats you.

Or perhaps your booze...your news.

Can't find where I snoozed.

Have a shot on me!

And if this arrived via freepmail, perhaps I should lay off the booze.

That said, best wishes for a Saturday nite and a wonderful weekend.

I don’t know who they contacted, or if a general distress signal was sent. My understanding is that they remain American citizens.

Not sure what to make of this one. Part of me is wanting the parents to get the bill.

Maybe they should be compelled to do “volunteer” work for one of the rescuing organizations involved. Maybe 8 hours per week, for a month or three.

Just as people are required to have accident insurance, etc., for land vehicles, they should have insurance for these types of water “excursions”. Not sure if they do, but it should cost them something for this. 150k$ would be good.

Yeah make it even more costly to leave your home. So expensive that only the rich can afford it. Yep thats the American way

Skill has nothing to do with it. Obviously he was not skilled enough to fix the problem. When a person puts him/herself in a given situation, they must be prepared to accept the consequences of these actions. Accident or no accident. It used to be ambulance costs were free as well, but no more. The costs for a sea rescue are significantly more, require more time, more resources, etc. He did or should have known this going in and must be prepared to pay for any rescue, etc.

It’s called taking responsibility. It’s no different than anything else. Get insurance, do something that financially covers such types of things. Anyone taking a round-the-world sailing trip on such a small craft and NOT expecting some sort of trouble would be a fool. The American way is to take responsibility for your actions, and not offload the cost on others.

Im amazed at how many freepers are demanding the govt should control who can go to sea. Insisting they must be means tested before being allowed to leave their homes. Should the same thing be required for remote land areas? This rescue only took a few short days. Here in florida they’ve bee looking for a private plane for over a week. Maybe he should have been required to post a bond before being allowed to take off.

If a white child requires rescue, gay lefty SanFran presstitutes come out and COUNT EVERY SINGLE DIME and scream the whole time.

Meanwhile if a gazillion illegals live in the Mission District and cost the city a FORTUNE, well, they have NO PROBLEM with it.

'Coast Guard-licensed captain.'

That's really doesn't mean jack under his creds for a sailboat. He has experience paralleling the coast. Open water is different.

As to the cost, so what. It is something truly useful to do. Not like using taxpayer money to buy votes to enslave taxpayers.

B.A.S.E. jumping from the new World Trade Center or something similar is stupid.

Sailing with your family, if you have the requisite skill and a suitable boat, is not.

Small boats is stupid?

How about a boat made from hand sawn logs?

read the story at the link and see what is possible in ‘small boats’.
