WHITEHOUSE , Texas, A Texas woman who was approached by a police officer who was “acting suspicious” was arrested after she failed to stop and talk to him.
Melissa Bonnette was out for a walk on Friday morning when a Whitehouse Police Department officer pulled up alongside her on a motorcycle and asked her to talk.
The officer, Shawn Johnson, allegedly approached Bonnette because she was walking on the wrong side of the road.
"I thought that maybe he was flirting," Bonnette told KYTX. "I just thought it was odd, I thought it was odd. I wasn't really sure but I felt uncomfortable because there wasn't anyone around. He just crept along beside me on his motorcycle and he started saying, 'Hey ma'am! I want to talk to you. Hey stop, ma'am! I want to talk to you.' Then my anxiety rose even higher.”
Bonnette refused to stop and began jogging away from Johnson. He then got off the bike, tackled her and put her in handcuffs.
"Normally if a police officer pulls up, in my opinion, it's awful odd for somebody just to take off and not want to speak to the police officer," said Whitehouse Police Chief Craig Shelton. "And he had a lawful reason to be there and to stop her."
No charges were filed after the arrest.
"I really don't want to live in a town where something like this could happen to a law-abiding citizen," Bonnette said. "I'm not going to be able to walk anymore, and that's sad because I enjoy walking every day. But I'm terrified. It was just so traumatic."
I initially thought he was hitting on her and when she took off it pissed him off. But after looking at that picture they may be more into each other.
In our state pedestrians are to walk on the left, facing oncoming traffic. Which leads to the question which side of the road was she on, and was it really the wrong side.
What is the definition of Highway. It looks like she was on a dirt road.

Indeed, the “Officer Safety” types will have lumped you and me into the “enemy” category if SHTF, because they will be a “gang” unto themselves, preying on the citizenry for survival.

Actually, in almost every case, everyone would want to take off and not speak to the police officer.

Back in the old days when people actually walked for miles down highways there was a sign every so often that read “Walk On Left Facing Traffic”. I wonder which side she was on.

But seriously, the so called PEACE officer Shawn Johnson thinks he is somehow entitled to be a manly PIECE officer. Saw the interview with the attractive and gentle young lady so I understand why the officer might be interested in “talking” to her.

I would imagine that Shawn Johnson of Whitehouse, Texas also has a small penis and suffers from the compensating behavior that goes with that unfortunate condition. Lady walking in a small neighborhood? Who the heck worries about which side of the road to walk on in a quiet neighborhood, NO ONE. This “macho man” was not worried about safety, he was hittin on her.
Whitehouse has had more than its fair share of LEO issues. Guess they ain’t over yet.
I wouldn’t be surprised if other women start coming forward with accusations on this cop.
In the picture they all look like biker thugs.
As others have said, it was probably a really good thing for her dog that he/she wasn't with her......cop was being and is an A-hole. Wow, what a badass! /s
P.E.A.C.E=Police Extremism As a Common Exercise?
Seriously I used to be more than willing to give the police the benefit of the doubt in reported cases of harassment because they usually involved a common thug criminal claiming it to muddy the case against him. And probably still are many such “cases” in court now.
But all these recent stories like this where it’s clear harassment unwarranted by any concern for “safety” has damaged such generosity on my part.
The Bundy disaster is the most egregious that comes to mind recently. Where his sister was thrown to the ground for daring to go outside a “free speech zone” whatever that is.
Honestly, what’s happened to this country? It’s sick and sad.
Cops of all kinds and at all levels have set themselves apart from the ordinary citizen. Particularly at this time in the USA newbe cops of all persuasions, bottom to top, have been allowed to act as if the USA were their own land to control. The actions at the Vet memorials and now in Nevada should be an alert about the ‘kings’ new empire. Ive had my own situation with the newbe attitude as to target practice with a new pellet rifle.

And her suspicion wasn’t unreasonable, since cops long ago proved themselves untrustworthy. Predatory and agressive behavior by cops is hardly unknown.

Because it probably was a hit on. Bet he has a stack of complaints, all kept conveniently confidential and known to his chief or sheriff who brushes it off.
Just as long as the cop went home safe.
He needs to think about his approach and modify it. Granted, new and sometimes strange situations pop up often for cops, but scripting in advance and practicing approaches in front of a mirror can help much of the time.
