Johnny Depp’s “Transcendence” bombed last night as expected, taking in just $11.5 million. That’s a disaster for a $150 million movie.

This is Depp’s second major flop at the box office, following the catastrophic “Lone Ranger.” And now this poses an important question: can Depp open a movie that isn’t “Pirates of the Caribbean”? The answer is No. He’s made zillions from the Disney adventure movies.

I think in “Transcendence” it mostly showed his head. I saw him on Jimmy Kimmel awhile back, and he’s gotten quite porky, er, portly.

He lost that “thing” that made him so bankable.

Frankly POTC II and (espcially) III were pretty awful. And not just Lone Ranger but damn near every film he has done has been at best a break-even and many big losers.

He is a white Eddie Murphy.

He is richer than God so he should just give up.

“...and he’s gotten quite porky, er, portly.”

Perhaps he can do a remake of “Apocalypse Now”. He would make a great Captain Kurtz(?) - the crazy, fat guy played by Marlon Brando.

I went and saw Heaven is For Real. First time I have set foot in a movie theater for 12 years. A very, VERY good movie, be sure to catch it either in theaters or when it comes out on DVD or cable.

It all starts with the script. I don’t care who is in it. Tell a good story well and they’ll show up. Tell that same story poorly and it bombs.

From what I have heard, the script is terrible.

As much as I think Depp is oversold, the fact that this movie bombed (so far) should not be put squarely on Johnny Depp’s thin shoulders. This is a case of new wine in an old bottle. I saw the previews while waiting for another feature. Everything about the movie was dreadful, grim and repulsive. I don’t want to pay almost a Baker’s Dozen dollars just to see the world being ruined. Some Dystopic films are necessary, and bring something new for consideration. I saw nothing original about this adaptaion in the previews. His character was not easy to like of even care about. J. Depp is mostly not believable as a leading man. Remember ‘The Tourist’, that crater of a movie he did with Angelina Jolie? Who thought of putting those two together, I wonder? Talk about Fire and Ice.

If you showed me a picture of only Johnny Depp, I still wouldn’t know who he is.

taking your main character and jamming him inside a computer for half the movie is a great way to destroy any action the plot might have had.

Ever see "Source Code" with Jake Gyllenhaal? Man, what a downer of a movie.

"And not just Lone Ranger"

Maybe It's just me, but I was touched when "Tonto’s" eyes misted over when the boy dressed as a cowboy (at the museum) opened fire on him.

Given a GOOD script, Depp can act, and carry the role.

Not to worry, he’ll probably show up as Moses in a remake of the Ten Commandments.

The problem was with the script. It was good until about halfway and then it turned into a made for television movie. I think the writer didn’t know where to go with the story.

>>Given a GOOD script, Depp can act, and carry the role<<

Given his script selection for quite some time, we may never know.
