Sotomayor accuses colleagues of trying to ‘wish away’ racial inequality

Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s fierce defense of the affirmative action efforts like the ones that helped move her from a Bronx housing project to the upper echelons of American law found renewed voice Tuesday in an impassioned dissent that accused colleagues of trying to “wish away” racial inequality — and drew a tart response from Chief Justice John G. Roberts

I remember about twenty years ago my college was asked to start hiring females for the geography department which had no female profs or instructors at the time. All the profs and assistant profs were males...which I hear is pretty common in geography. (We only had a few female students in my geography classes...90% male.)

One of the male profs told me about the problems they had hiring competent female geog. profs. They interviewed a number of female candidates, but they were all substandard. And these male geog. profs were mostly libs like in the other departments.

Curiously, there was one visiting female geog. prof from another university who used to come in and lecture on ground water. She was very competent. None of the male geog. profs at my college knew as much as she did about the subject. But she wasn't interviewing for the job the female candidates were interviewing for.

I shudder to think that my son and my granddaughters may live under a SCOTUS with 5 or 6 members on it like Sotomayor.

Can you imagine the racial resentment and payback that would be loosed on the nation? If there still is one at that point.

In Puerto Rico yes, she would be considered white and therefore privileged.

One of my best friends, a black woman who had worked at GTE for over 8 years when I arrived (they are now Verizon), is one of the most anti-affirmative action people I have ever met.

She worked at GTE and he husband owned three Subway stores. Between the two of them, they worked for every single thing they owned.

When GTE was trimming down, before we got taken over by Bell Atlantic (to form Verizon), they were doing RIFs. One of the other department managers made a snide remark that she was double covered being a BLACK, FEMALE - he said, “Don’t worry, your chair is the one that we know won’t be touched.” It pissed her off!

At the next department meeting, in front of a room of about 40 colleagues, Rochelle stated, matter-of-factually, that if the only reason they planned on keeping her was because she was black OR a woman, they could take this job and shove it. And she didn’t make it sound as nice as I just did!

I had the cubicle right next to her. Our boss, a man that had gotten a promotion to a Tampa office and was back in Dallas to help trim the crews, took all of us to the bar next door at 1:30PM and said, we need to blow off a little steam. He explained in no uncertain terms that Rochelle was being retained due ONLY to her skills and NOTHING else went into that decision.

I left about six months later, but she is still there and should be retiring this year or next. Great woman! Taught me a lot about race relations and relationships between the sexes! I once asked her why she didn’t try to defend all the things that so many other blacks attempted to defend. She said, “I can’t make you trust ALL blacks anymore than you can make me trust ALL whites. All I can do is make you believe and trust in me! That is just about as far as any of us can contribute to race relations.”

I know that quote, because I wrote it down - it made such a huge impact on my young thought process.

Funny thread.

In what way is “Hispanic” a race?

Is the king of Spain a victim eligible for redress of past wrongs perpetrated by Anglo- Saxon Protestants?

Sotomayor is running an ethnic con game of the highest order if she doesn’t believe in the above.

If she DOES believe it, she’s stupid AND deranged.

Probably the latter in her case.

so then in earnest Justice Sonia Sotomayor is a lot like obammy.
Both are quota boys. The byproduct of affirmative action.
Neither most likely could have made it on their own in a level playing field.
And I should admire these two buffoons?

“sotomayor wrote 50+ pages to say she disagrees?”

I doubt she is capable of writing it herself, probably written by her like minded Clerks.

Your logic overwhelms me in your post. Can see the clerks of sotomayor meeting to say okay, she disagrees. How stupid can we help her to be? Must have been the clerk that suggested they write 50+ pages, of I disagree, that won the argument.
