Satellite View of the Americas
Scientific Computing ^ | Thursday, April 24, 2014 | unattributed

NOAA's GOES-East satellite captured this stunning view of the Americas on Earth Day, April 22, 2014 at 11:45 UTC/7:45 a.m. EDT. The data from GOES-East was made into an image by the NASA/NOAA GOES Project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD.

In North America, clouds associated with a cold front stretch from Montreal, Canada, south through the Tennessee Valley, and southwest to southern Texas bringing rain east of the front. A low pressure area in the Pacific Northwest is bringing rainfall in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, stretching into the upper Midwest, according to NOAA's National Weather Service. That low is also bringing precipitation north into the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta, Canada. Another Pacific low is moving over southern Nevada and the National Weather Service and rain from that system is expected to fall in central California, Nevada and northern Utah.

Near the equator, GOES imagery shows a line of pop up thunderstorms. Those thunderstorms are associated with the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). The ITCZ encircles the Earth near the equator.

In South America, convective (rapidly rising air that condenses and forms clouds) thunderstorms pepper Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and northwestern and southeastern Brazil.

GOES satellites provide the kind of continuous monitoring necessary for intensive data analysis. Geostationary describes an orbit in which a satellite is always in the same position with respect to the rotating Earth. This allows GOES to hover continuously over one position on Earth's surface, appearing stationary. As a result, GOES provide a constant vigil for the atmospheric "triggers" for severe weather conditions such as tornadoes, flash floods, hail storms and hurricanes.

Cool. I can attest to the fact that it was raining here in Ohio on Earth Day, and as you can see, Ohio is obscured by clouds in the image.

I love the picture. Snagged a copy!

Geeze, look at how much darker the planet is now. CLEAR EVIDENCE of Global Warming. In fact, if you look closely enough, you can see the steam rising off the North Pole.

Let’s see the Tea Party talk their way out of this one...

The article must be wrong. At 7:45 am EDT on 22 April, the west coast would be dark, and the terminator would run through Texas.

Here's a visualization of the Earth at that time from that satellite, computed by John Walker's Fourmilab site.

OMG! No Clouds at all!

That's because the image is artificial, deliberately created to show how it would look if there were no clouds.

What I'm asserting is that the posted image either was taken at a different time or is also artificial. Because there is no doubt that it was night-time on the west coast at the stated time.

The Fourmilab site is very neat. You can give it a position in outer space, and it will compute how the earth would look from that perspective. It also has orbit data for a large variety of satellites out there. You can pick one and ask how the earth looked from that satellite at a particular point in time.

E.g., if you've been watching CNN lately, you might want to pick the view from Inmarsat 3-F1, 35810 km above the Indian Ocean on 8 March 00:11 UTC ...

Something quite interesting was happening to 239 people in that pond below, and data from Inmarsat 3-F1 has caused a lot of activity in the lower right part of the image lately.

Thanks for the info! :-)

:’) We are managing to have a forbidding looking blue-gray overcast here, despite the fact that the Sun is also half-shining and the wind is blowing about 30 mph.

Why, just because he was a misogynist bully who beat his girlfriend to death, then put her body (unless she was still alive) into a trunk and continued to live in the place? And then fled to France which refused to extradite him because of the death penalty in the US?

It’s supposed to rain here every day and night for the next week, according to NOAA.

And Einhorn's lawyer, who hammered his bail down to an affordable $4k (coughed up by Canadian libtard Barbara Bronfman, of the adult beverage Bronfmans) was one of the most famous RINOs in the land, Arlen Specter. Einhorn skipped bail in 1981 and wasn't finally returned until 20 July 2001 (he was found in France in 1997, but it took that long to pry him loose from the Frogs).

“Why, just because he was a misogynist bully who beat his girlfriend to death”

I know. I am *so* judgmental.
