Panera Bread is going to start using kiosks to input customer orders. The fast-casual chain will start adding about eight kiosks per restaurant, writes Venessa Wong at Bloomberg Businessweek. Customers will also be able to order by phone.

As a result, there will be one to two fewer cashiers in restaurants.

Panera Bread CEO Ron Shaich said that the new system would help accuracy of orders. Customers would also be able to customize their food.

Shaich told Businessweek that it won't be cutting back on workers. The former cashiers will now carry food to customers' tables.

The lines at our local Paneras can run fairly long, pretty much any time of day. SO it’s a long wait one way or the other. For the most part, I enjoy interacting with the personnel when placing my order, but I guess now that will be shifted to when they bring the food to the table.

The Coca-Cola Freestyle self-serve soda machines offer 125 different kinds of soda plus custom flavors. How long before Starbucks comes out with their version? The tattooed and face pierced liberal arts degree holders will have to find a new line of work.

No, they'll just head for your place and grab all your stuff.

You are all such babies-age wise. My first job in high school was in an upscale clothing store as a sales clerk and sportwear model on Saturdays. $.76 an hour, no sitting down EVER, 20 minutes for lunch. On Monday and Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. I worked in the credit office typing collection letters on a manual typewriter. Being able to type 100 wpm errors 100 wpm earned a raise to $.80 an hour after 6 months.

First real full-time job was as a flight attendant for the HUGE sum of $244 a month. We had to pay for our uniforms and meals but our hotel was covered during a layover. Paid for half of a shared apartment, groceries and a car payment. Wouldn’t even cover my groceries now.

Shaich told Businessweek that it won't be cutting back on workers.

Accurate but perhaps somewhat misleading. While it will reduce bad orders and thus lower overhead, it also means not having to hire more people / cashiers in future while seeing how well technology can work in this area. Also they may not be reducing workers NOW but that does not mean it won't happen in the future.

The only time I ate at Panera Bread turned me off completely. My sandwich was nothing but thick, chewy bread, with very little meat.

I have heard the coffee is excellent, though.

Yes, they probably will cut back on workers, but they won’t announce it.

Employee-turnover is so high in that industry that they don't have to lay anyone off. They just don't replace 'em all when they do quit.

Minimum wage increases mandated by the government do not result in people losing their jobs [as the Democrats rightly claim], they just end up providing less opportunity to those still looking for work [as the Democrats neglect to claim].
