Dog found guarding 81-year-old skier's body (Tissue alert)
KRQE 13 Albuquerque ^ | May 5, 2014 | Gabrielle Burkhart

CORRALES, N.M. (KRQE) - Still skiing at age 81, Robert Blake’s family tells KRQE News 13, he died doing what he loved. Rescuers found Blake’s body this weekend in Colorado, and his loyal companion right there with him, refusing to leave his owner’s side.

Blake was cross-country skiing over the weekend with his dog, Buddy. His wife said she finds comfort knowing her husband had a friend standing guard until they found him.

“I knew Buddy was with him, and would not leave him, I knew that, you know just from my heart,” recalled Marlene Blake. Marlene said that thought helped comfort her as search and rescuers looked for her husband, Bob, in Colorado this weekend.

The 81-year-old was cross-country skiing in Lizard Head Pass near Telluride, with his golden retriever, Buddy, something he often did.

But when Blake didn’t check in with his wife Friday night, “I knew, I knew he was dead, or he would’ve,” said Marlene. She said her husband would always call to let her know where he was.

Blakes’ neighbor at their cabin in Colorado found his vehicle Friday. Saturday afternoon, a search crew found Blake’s body under a tree in the snow, not far from the road. His loyal companion, Buddy, was still at his side.

“There are a large number of coyotes in the area and Buddy refused to leave Mr. Blake’s body until we spent some time coaxing him to trust us,” explained Sheriff Bill Masters, of San Miguel County in Colorado.

“He’s the hero in this,” said Marlene, looking at Buddy.

“I used to say you know I worry about you, you might be in some snow-bank up there and I’ll never find you and he said, ‘don’t worry that’s where I want to be,’” recalled Marlene. “So he got his wish,” she cried. An avid hiker, skier, hunter and fisherman, the lifelong outdoorsman and retired veterinarian loved exploring the land, and died doing what he enjoyed.

this might be the first time where i read "he died doing what he enjoyed," where i am content...

A cop that didn’t shoot a dog. Good for him.

Valid point on play: usually when Leos and dogs cross paths the Leos shoot the dogs, usually for little to no reason.

Here’s another dog who stayed by his owner’s side after his death. His coworkers cared for him until our rescue was able to bring Henry in.

That is actually a valid point.

Many times dogs have refused to allow rescue people to get near their fallen owners.

God forbid I pass out or something when I’m with my Dobes.
Odin guards me, personally, and Seven seems to think that wherever I am, *that* space is “mine” by default and none shall pass.

OTOH, if I’ve dropped dead, that means they’ll probably be coming right behind me if cops get called.

:-\

Dogs who refused to allow anyone near ~have~ been shot by cops during the rescue of their owners.

A fact of life and the LEO/dog animosity dynamic is the new normal.

No point in dodging reality for sentiment.

Bless these officers for being decent.

Tell me about it!
Though I have seen, small dogs, herd EMT personnel to the injured.
Poor little thing seemed to nervously hover an inch from the floor.

But still, was shocked that the sheriff didn’t shoot the dog.
Not usually how it turns out.
O_o

Dogs are such wonderfully loyal creatures.

On the other hand, I’m quite sure my cat would have gone through my pockets after about five minutes and gone on a catnip and calico floozie bender with my credit cards while I slowly froze solid.

I’m sure you know of the ever-growing list of dogs killed by cops.

Cops don’t like anything that doesn’t immediately surrender upon their order.

They, who have always been mankind’s’ first line of defense, are now all now squarely in the sights.

It’s a mad world.

I recall that one thread where a three hundred pound moron shot a tiny eight pound dog because he was supposedly afraid.
I hate that list and the fact that it is not only growing, but speeding up.

So true; I likely came close to losing my black lab back in 1999 when as a weekend caregiver I was out shopping when the lady passed away. A neighbor had called for a welfare check and when EMS arrived, they found my lab guarding her. Luckily I returned back shortly after they arrived and before the police took down the dog. I immediately took him and put him in my car where he was safe. The house was put off limits to all until the medical examiner arrived to investigate.

“I felt threatened”®

The list is now growing exponentially.

We have an ongoing argument here; leave up the dog warning signs or take them down?

If we warn them, they come in ready to fire, maybe.

If we don’t, we may lose the chance to be told to confine them.

Which is the way that’s clear?
It’s 50-50, now.

I’m getting to where I believe that, if, for some reason, cops ever do come here, my dogs are most likely history.

And then, you’ll all be posting to my memorial thread.

“But 81 and skiing? I don’t know....”

Why not? My friend had an uncle that was a mountain climber well into his nineties. And no, he didn’t die atop some mountain, either. My point is, age alone is no indicator of ability.

Yes, thank God the sherriff had some compassion and common sense.

If only more of them did, most dog and cop stories would be happy ones.

Of course, one could argue that those who shoot dogs are of the mindset that non-officers are like slaves-—they may own dogs only if it pleases their betters.
