Friends say 93-year-old Pearlie Golden still shopped at the grocery store and greeted friends with a jubilant "Hey, baby!" Now they and the mayor of this small Texas town want the police officer who shot and killed her gone.
Robertson County District Attorney Coty Siegert said a preliminary autopsy shows Golden was shot twice in the body and grazed by a third bullet. It's the second time Stem has shot and killed a suspect since joining the department in 2012, Siegert said.
"There's no justification. Any police officer would know not to kill a 93-year-old fragile woman when they could have backed off," said William Foster, 64, a retired professor in Hearne. "She was no threat to him."

Did she have a pitbull sitting on her lap?
I’m so sorry for all involved in this.
A 93 yr old should not have to die in such a violent manner.
After going back and reading your original post and seeing your statement “The ‘Professor’ is just a bit naive...”, I withdraw my apology.
The ‘naive’ statement is what I based my original reply to you on.
I stand by my original statement. “The Professor is 100% right!”
My apology was based on the quoted statement of the Professor that you put in your reply and I thought it was yours.
I may be old and cranky, but this time I got it right. I think...
Unless you can show me what you mean by the Professor being “naive,” I’ll just think you made a mistake in your word choice.
Hearne has a population of around 4,500 people. It is about 50% black, 32% Hispanic & 18% white. The population is slowly but steadily declined over the past 20 years. There have been many racial problems in the past.
The local Wal-Mart there closed about 10 years ago due to employee theft.
I need to correct my statement that I live there, I don’t live there, but I live close to there. I had forgotten that it was in Hearne, and not my town/city where this happened; I got in on the tail end of the local news last night (KBTX cited)!
I agree with that statement; just not with ‘calling me something else’.
Old n cranky here, too.
Be well, FRiend.
She failed a driving test the previous week. He nephew came to take her car keys away. She responded by threatening him with her gun outside the house. He called the police.
We don't know what happened that led up to the shooting, but that's not going to stop the usual FR cop haters from their customary childish remarks without the facts.
“However, reading this AP article by Weber, I cannot make any sense from it. It is a disjointed, unconnected hodgepodge of useless information and vague statements with absolutely no follow up.”
I’ve noticed that all the arcticles about cop killings that are used to energize the anti-cop lynch mob are like this.
The story won't load for me. At any rate, what does "brandished" mean here? If she was pointing a gun at the cop, that's one thing. But if she was only holding a gun, that's something else.
My grandfather lived on a farm way out in the sticks. If he heard a knock at his door after dark, you can bet he had his pistol with him.
The Walmart closing was one of only a few that couldn’t make it. Hearne was supported
by cotton production at one time. I guess as automation became more prevelant it also
reduced employment and people moved on.
I was speaking of personal knowledge of things going on in one place.
I understand. Thanks
She was pointing a gun erratically (in the direction of the police), and it was outside, in broad daylight.
Quannell X has arrived......
Protesters, mayor want officer fired in Hearne shooting
snip
Houston activist Quanell X, who organized Thursday’s march, warned of “armed
protests” if Stem is not fired.
“Like hell will we stand by and let him have a third shot,” Quanell X said.
Down here in Texas we are always calling people who we disagree with something...
So,,, I will return the sentiment and call you a FRiend too....

Getting old is hell, ain’t it?
BTW... Why don’t you create a profile page (home page).
Let FReepers know what you want them to know about yourself.
Thanks...
I guess we can all say it was just a matter of time, short time, not surprising. Better ask the Lord to quell it with some black community leaders who are true Christians, or even moral men.
It doesn’t look good that the police officer who shot her had this previous incident, but then I would hate to be a police officer in that town. Just sayin’
Retreat.
I was on a cop shoots dog thread the other day where several FReepers suggested that the cop should have gone back to his car and waited in the car till the big agressive dog was gone.
In other words - the cop should have hid.
If a bullet from the 93 year old hits you in the head, would you be better off than if it had been fired by a 30 year old?
I am not saying it was justified, I am just keeping an open mind since I don’t have the facts. Look what went down with the Trayvon case.
Ditto! Thanks for the info.
He probably wanted the car and she didn’t want to give it up. It is a tragic ending.
I agree that it looks bad and probably should have been handled differently. Did he have backup? What was the environment like as far as other threats from the nephew and others?
you could not pay me to patrol a hood. I have a ton of respect for most officers in general, but those who are a minority in an area almost deserve war pay. Soon, they will be in a war zone and it could happen instantly.
